Thanks to this great new shelf, another 20 #tikimugs are finally on display along a narrow space which connects the kitchen to the office/tiki room (this passageway is known as “The Aloha Airlock”). It was a long time in coming and I owe more than a hearty mahalo to @kontikitucker, a good pal and renaissance man who’s not only a master woodworker, but ceramicist and brewer (and IT Svengali by trade). Several months ago, I gave him some tall/ narrow/ low profile specs and he built this beauty from Poplar with perfect dovetail jointed corners. I then hesitated a long while as I delayed the next step which required abuse: giving it the right look for that “Beachcomber Aesthetic”. In order to give it an antiquated, lived-in look I randomly got medieval with chisel, hammer, chain and torch. After an extended beating, gouging and burning, I stained the shelf with Minwax and strung netting (of course the whole thing ties into wall studs in four different places). No doubt the mug selection will rotate (this first lineup includes non vintage ones).
