Loki takes Valentine's Day a little too literally (written for the fuckyeahlokidarcy Tasertricks Valentine prompt: First 'I Love You').
.
"Why does that infant have tiny wings?"
"It's Cupid, Loki."
"Well it's highly inaccurate. To support such a substantial body weight, the child would require a wingspan at least three times that size."
"We're talking about a make-believe dude in a diaper shooting arrows at people. It's not supposed to be accurate." Darcy sighed and stuck a final push pin into the corner of the Valentine's Day banner she was tacking onto the wall. "Is it straight?"
"It's fine."
Loki wasn't even looking at the banner and Darcy felt her blood pressure slowly inching its way up into 'I'm about to strangle you' territory.
"You do realize that the party's tonight and we literally have nothing ready. Nothing!" Darcy emphasized, jumping down from the chair she'd been standing on. She stepped back and examined the banner, finding that it was, in fact, crooked. "Dammit, Loki!"
"I don't see why it's necessary to host such an event," Loki complained, "I am forced to spend my weekdays in the company of the Avengers, why would I want to dedicate my free time to them as well?"
"Because they're our friends and I really want our first party to be a success," Darcy chewed her lip, looking around their messy living room. Half the decorations still needed to be put up and there was also food, drinks, and music to be taken care of. Seriously, party planning was even more stressful than fighting intergalactic bad guys.
She and Loki had been living together for a total of a year now, and with the approach of February 14th, it was the perfect excuse for Darcy to throw their first house party. It had seemed like a great idea at the time but now that the day of the party was finally upon them, she was feeling distinctly less keen about her hostess duties.
"Can't you do some kind of hocus-pocus fancy magic stuff to help me out?" Darcy stuffed her hand into one of the bags of party supplies and pulled out a tangled mass of red streamers.
"Something like this, perhaps?" Loki raised his hand, sweeping it from one side of the room to the other. Instantly streamers and balloons shimmered into place, while a table of drinks and snacks took form in the corner and soft, tasteful music began to play from some unknown source.
Darcy groaned, throwing a handful of her now useless streamers in his direction. "Why didn't you do that in the first place?!"
Loki blinked, shrugging one shoulder. "You never asked."
*
The party had been a success and Darcy was feeling pretty damn pleased with herself as she tossed the last of the plastic cups and empty potato chip bags into the trash. It was just past one a.m. and she couldn't wait to crawl into bed and snooze until noon, preferably with her hot, Godly boyfriend at her side.
"I'm going to bed," she called out, flicking off the kitchen lights and padding down the hallway to the bedroom. "Loki?"
He didn't answer. In fact, it looked like he wasn't even in the house. Tony had probably suckered him into going out for a night cap, Darcy thought. Even though Loki couldn't get drunk off of Midgardian booze, that didn't stop Tony from challenging him to any and all types of drinking games, and Loki had never been one to turn down a challenge.
Darcy brushed her teeth, slipped on her pj's, and crawled into bed, so tired she fell asleep almost the instant her head hit the pillow.
At some unknown, obscenely early hour, she found herself being shaken awake by Loki.
Darcy whined, rolling away from him and burying her face in her pillow.
"Darcy," he whispered her name, shaking her again.
"Ugh, what," Darcy croaked, turning her head to squint at him in the darkness.
"I have something for you. A gift." He sounded so excited, it was enough to make her sit up and watch with curiosity as he pulled a small box from behind his back.
"I have done some research on the Saint Valentine who is worshiped on this day," Loki said proudly, passing her the box.
"Aww," Darcy grinned though it was interrupted mid-way by a sleepy yawn, "you got me a Valentine's Day present? That's sweet." She eagerly tore into the package, pulling out a small glass vial that hung from a gold chain. "Erm, what is it?" A strange, grey-colored mist swirled inside the vial, looking slightly ominous.
Loki smiled widely. "An ancient virus I procured from Odin's weapons vault. Valentine is the patron saint of plagues, you know."
Darcy's eyes went wide and she dropped the necklace, scooting away from where it lay innocently on the bedspread. "You gave me a freaking plague in a bottle?!" She shrieked.
"I thought you would like it." Loki looked genuinely confused by her reaction. "Perhaps I should have brought you bees instead," he muttered to himself.
Speechless, Darcy could only stare at him as slow, hysterical laughter rose in her throat. She soon found herself doubled over, laughing until tears formed in her eyes. "Oh my God," she gasped, trying to catch her breath, "you thought...oh my God," she collapsed into another fit of giggles, falling against Loki's side. "Loki, people don't buy gifts based on the actual Saint Valentine. They give stuff like chocolate and roses and teddy bears."
"Oh," Loki's shoulders slumped and he picked up the necklace, gently laying it back in the box.
He looked a bit like a kicked puppy and Darcy's heart melted. Wiping the last of the tears from her eyes, she sat on her knees, shifting so her face was level with his.
"Hey," she cupped his cheek with her hand, forcing him to look her in the eyes, "I really do appreciate it. You must have gone through a lot of trouble to get that for me, so thank you. Not gonna lie, it's weird and creepy and hella dangerous, but I love it." She sucked in a breath, gathering her courage before admitting, "I love you."
Loki's eyes darkened. "Darcy..."
"Come on," she tugged him down onto the mattress, raising a suggestive eyebrow, "isn't Valentine the saint of lovers too?"
"Yes," Loki panted as she leaned in and began to kiss his neck, "I believe so."
"So let's give him one hell of a performance," Darcy said as her lips moved down the skin of his throat.
Loki closed his arms around her, drawing her flush against him. "Darcy?"
"Yeah?"
"...I love you too."
Darcy drew back, smiling down at him with bright eyes. "Now that," she said, "is the perfect gift."
