What about a Much Ado where you surround Claudio and Hero with props implying their characters?
Like, for example, make Claudio a very artsy person. Every time the prince or Benedick goes to talk to him, he’s working on another project, surrounded by art supplies. A different kind of project. Pottery, sewing, bookbinding, jewelry-making... And then Hero’s maybe a fashion designer and you look at them and go, Well they’re going to be a power-couple in the design industry.
And then all the drama goes down and Leonato goes “Hee hee I am going to get a poem out of this awesome artsy guy and my daughter will be remembered for all of history”
and it’s absolute shite.
Watchin’ the DT/CT Much Ado, gonna haveta liveblog a wishlist...
-a Don John who wears a lot of black
-a Byzantine Much Ado in which Benedick is clearly Varangian, purely for a play on the line “Not until God make man of some other metal than earth”
-is it even possible to play a Beatrice who doesn’t actually know she’s speaking to Benedick during the masquerade?
-masquerades are such a trope, I bet Sebastian and Viola were known, as kids, for going as each other every single masquerade until it wasn’t even funny anymore, and then they do it in wherever the heck Orsino and Olivia live and are caught off guard when there are Antics
-possibly a Beatrice who is angling for Don John? with the whole ‘your father got good husbands, if a maid could come by them’ line
-a prince who is actually trolling Beatrice when he asks her to marry him. But like, good trolling, where she gets to the end of her lines before she finds out?
-I was going to ask for a prince who vindictively suggests Beatrice and Benedick marry, but this edition just gave that to me, well done
-I know there’s no textual support, but I really want to see my ace and demi headcanons for Benedick and Beatrice played out with proper talking about the misunderstanding and... yeah. Obviously ace Benedick and Beatrice. (There’s textual support for the aceness, sure, but the talking about it, not so much.)
-that look Borrachio just gave Don John of “You are a sick and petty bastard” was gold
-Don John is just so bad at being a villain, he keeps trying and failing miserably and adorably, oh lord - he introduced himself, remember, by giving a kid a cigarette for solving a Rubiks cube. Ooooooh, evil. And he had to have Borrachio walk him through the whooooole plan.
-Ah yes, time for the Superman Shirt of Woe
Oh, so this is what Patrick means when he says, “This is my play, mine mine mine”
