This is an incredibly well-written game, with a really compelling and well-paced story, pretty consistent humor, great character development, and good dialogue. The biggest issue with this game is that there’s so much dialogue that it ends up cutting itself off or being easily missed. That’s not a bad issue to have, since the worse issue would be if the dialogue got grating. Maybe it would for some people, but I enjoyed it and loved all the characters and their dynamics with each other.Â
The gameplay elements are... passable. They’re not bad, but they’re not particularly exciting. Combat is pretty fun, if a bit unwieldy. The most enjoyable part of combat is swapping between Guardian abilities and gun elements, but there’s not really a consistently good way to perform those actions in the heat of battle with the control scheme. Combat mostly starts to feel pretty same-y, with a lot of repeat enemies or enemies that don’t do anything unique from other types, but I would argue that it’s not the main focus here.Â
The story is the most enjoyable part of this experience, and I was consistently impressed by it, even looking past some corny scenes and the occasional deus ex machina. I definitely enjoyed my time with the game and am glad I checked it out before it left Game Pass.
