Mt Merapi, on a beautiful sunny day that proved to be quite cold 3000 or so meters up.
Standing almost 3000m up in the air, what an indescribable feeling that was. Mt Merapi, Indonesia
Case of Mt. Merapi
Context
Merapi sits on the island of Java, which is part of a volcanic island arcÂ
Sits on the rim of the Pacific Ring of Fire
Destructive plate boundary
Volcano is formed by the the subduction of the Indo-Australian plate beneath the Sunda plateÂ
Hazards
Volcanic boms, lava flows, steam and poisonous gas are able to travel 8km from the crater
Pyroclastic flow which can occur unexpectedly
Consists of extremely hot gases and rocks which are able to flatten and incinerate everything in its pathÂ
Lahars (volcanic mudflows)
Able to cover 20km from the crater
Ash travel
Can cause engine failure when drawn into aircraft
Crop failure [significant problem]
Cropland covered with ash
Or destroyed due to collapsed bidding and built up ash on the roofs
Prediction
Indonesian Centre for Volcanological and Geological Hazard Management (CVGHM)
Monitor volcanic activity
Seismographs
Satellite observation
Gas reading
Observations of volcano movement
Issue alerts on the activity
Draw up hazard maps for the Indonesian governmentÂ
Based on previous activity to identify relative danger of different areasÂ
Why do people still want to stay on Merapi despite it being a dangerous place to live?
Spiritual reasons
The Javanese see Merapi as a sacred place inhabited by spirits which, to the local people, are source of life, freshwater, forests and fertile soil for their agricultural activities
People valued the spiritual guidance of the spiritual leader, Mbah Maridjan more than that of the scientific community
Pyroclastic flows that occurred on 26 October 2010 at 5pm killed 35 people and the spiritual leader himself, who refused to evacuate despite warnings given by the CVGHM
Effects
Pyroclastic flows --> killed 35 people and the village spiritual gatekeeper
Ashfall
Flights cancelled for about 2 weeks
Ash plumes fell in towns as far as 240km away
Accumulated 4cm deep
Earthquake activity
Human impact
353 deaths
487 injured
800 suffering from psychological traumaÂ
Economic impact
870ha of farmland and forests lost
Cost est $3.6millionÂ
LaharÂ
Caused by the rainy season (November-April)
Heavy rain mixed with earlier pyroclastic flow materialÂ
Damaged houses, farms and villages in the Magelang district and affected 3,000 people
Future
MErapi will continue to pose a considerable threat to the surrounding population and the extent of destruction/loss of lives could increase as the population density on Java continues to rise. Despite the death of the spiritual gatekeeper, it is uncertain as to whether the local community will be more persuaded by the scientists.
