I feel like a lot of the butch/femme sapphic discourse is deeply intertwined with how so many people refuse to acknowledge that mspec people can very often be gender-non-conforming too, and that mspec history is deeply and irrevocably mixed with all of gay history. And this has always been the case; yet we have, for reasons of separatism, erased it.
