okay so the sex chromosomes are referred to as X and Y, and their combination determines a person's sex. typically, human females have two X chromosomes while males possess an XY pairing
when a baby is conceived, a mother can only pass on an X chromosome, because they only have X sex chromosomes. but a father can pass on either X or Y, which ultimately determines the sex of the baby. XX results in a daughter, and XY results in a son
but dragonlord abilities can only be passed on to a dragonlord's first born son, and will not be passed onto girls. this may present a problem if a dragonlord only ever has daughters
so what if, for dragonlords, there is a built-in failsafe for passing on dragonlord abilities?
what if dragonlords could only pass on the Y sex chromosome?? (resulting in only ever being able to have sons). or, at the very least, are heavily more likely to pass on the Y chromosome. this way, there is almost a certainty that they will have a son to pass their culture and abilities to
obviously this is grossly simplified, and doesn't include the possibility of those with chromosome abnormalities, other contributors to conceiving a child and their sex, or transgender people, but it's interesting to think that magic could affect biology and genetics like that, to ensure its bloodline survival
With the amount of time I've spent trying to sleep I could have watched two episodes of Merlin.
