"Miss You" by Ms Ray & Nourished by Time
MG:
Ms Ray's Melt EP is designed with architectural sophistication as its guiding principle. All five songs sound like they're set in an LA office building at dusk -- right before both the German terrorists and John McClane roll in for the yearly Christmas party. Its highlight is "Miss You," featuring Nourished by Time fresh from last year's fantastic The Passionate Ones. Where he's earthy and sincere, vamping parts of his verse, Ms Ray is airy and delicate, vague in her concept of loss. Together they're natural duet partners, joining to elevate "Miss You" from minor break up to major earworm.
DV:
Maybe they're a little too natural of partners, in the way they hit the same vibe from different directions and settle into a middle groove that never quite sells the yearning the lyric describes. Or maybe it's the production, which keeps threatening to kick into higher gear and never quite does. Why not both? "Miss You" is a sum that's less than its parts, not a bad song by any stretch but one that's too genteel to dig in as deeply as it should. Ms Ray and Nourished By Time sing about longing for an ex, but what their song's really missing is drama.
