It’s the critical question in the life span of some of Melbourne’s longest standing venues that isn’t taken lightly. Is it time to refurbish, rebrand, and rebirth? Often in the wake of the sale of a venue, the new owners wish to come in an imprint their own style and decor in their new adventure! But overstep the mark and the consequences and effects of doing so can quickly unsettle the loyalty of those who frequent their “favorite” homely venue! So what is overstepping the mark? We look at some of Melbourne’s more famous venue rebirths and their outcomes.
From Viper Room to Red Bennies To Lux NightClub
In the space of 5 years saw this space transform from the once grungy viper room into a burlesque style bar with live stage shows and now into a glamour ridden nightclub! While the Viper Room certainly had its day, and share of headlines, we think the new Lux Nightclub is a positive change for the Chapel Street Precinct
From Frost Bites to The Temperance Hotel
Who could forget Frost Bites where you could order over 15 types of alcoholic slurpees, get messy, and still be kicking on to close. It had that institutional feel of a dirty pub, and love it or hate it, its a proud piece of Chapel Street History! Eradicating that dirty pub feel is The Temperance Hotel that has founds its place well in the Chapel Street precinct. Sitting pretty on the corner, the transformation now provides Chapel Street goers with a great local serving up great pub fare, and while we wouldn’t call it messy, you can certainly still rock a good time late into the evening.
From Silk Road To Miss Collins
Had Silk Road really run it’s course? We’re not quiet sure it had. It’s opulent decor was a highlight of the Melbourne Nightlife scene, and while it wasn’t for everyone, the venue still packed a punch on bigger occasions with some great nights out. But the Revamped Ms Collins brings an edgy almost grunge like feel to the venue and even though its barely four months old we think its brought something completely new to Collins Street that should be embraced!
From The Depot To The Precinct Hotel
Ahh the Depot! How could we forget…ummm well very easily actually! The Depot was the eyesore of Richmond. It even earn’t its name as the dirty depot! But in its wake rose The Precinct Hotel. A complete refurb saw the pub resurrect itself into a Richmond favourite, for sports fans and football goers from across town. Theres little doubt here that the Rebirth was welcome.
From The Market To The Emerson
The Market was one of Melbourne’s largest gay nightclubs and at its peak it was hugely popular! It was largely considered the backbone of the gay nightlife scene and in its demise saw the Commercial Road strip struggle. But a rebirth of the venue with under the name The Emerson has reignited the Commercial Road strip again. It’s sensational rooftop and 2 levels of clubbing are cementing the venue as the South Side goto destination!
Part 2 of this article will be coming shortly. If you’d like to recommend any other Rebirth’s let us know in the comments below!
