in my true heart of hearts I do believe Isaac has gifted kids syndrome. like the way his mother talks about how he used to be a good kid and have good grades and then suddenly everything changed when he’s being “influenced“ by his friends, when really its just mental issues he inherited from her that boiled over during puberty. She clearly cares about the way people perceive their family and perceive her as a mother, so even though she can understand that Isaac is struggling to extent she can never bring herself to stay or do anything about it. This is the explanation I found for the way she interacts with Isaac throughout the series in such an avoidant way that treads the line between angry and pitiful. Well Isaac is scared of his father because he’s scared of being punished, He scared of his mother because he’s scared of being a disappointment.
