Headcanon time. I’m thinking about Amelia being a Purple Heart veteran and that contributing to one of the reasons she (and even Arrow) left the Royal Navy… not only did she resign due to an unnecessarily bureaucratic and poorly administrated heavily decentralized military system… but following her injury from one of the various skirmishes she was apart of (I’d like to imagine something related to the Procyons due to her mentioning the Procyon Armada in the film), yes she got disability benefits, but she faced a combination of misogyny and ableism (especially from high ranking military officials) where her injuries were not treated as serious and most even assuming she was being overdramatic about them/“scammed” the veteran disability program… 🧐 Essentially, various Navy personnel would only respect her because of her rank as a Captain, not because she is a qualified woman who has experience (and the proof to show it with these scars) in her field.

It’s not something she’d talk about a lot- clearly something she doesn’t really want to discuss due to how rough it was in how she got it, her healing process, and how others treated her afterwards. The location of her injury I headcanon to be somewhere along her stomach; during the film when the longboat was shot down by the pirate crew, the reason she was injured so badly in the crash was due to the scar reopening.

I could probably expand on this headcanon more and I may at some point. Disabled veterans deserve more proper and positive rep so I go out of my way to make all my veteran favs Purple Hearts 🙂‍↕️ I also think her facing this injury and the societal reactions to it would’ve helped shape her personality into the disciplined and strong mindset she’s seen with in the modern day.

On a similar note, I’ve also been thinking about them lately. I feel like no one really explores their relationship outside of those who ship them and while I don’t mind the shippers I just really wish we had more of their friendship dynamic. Arrow is incredibly loyal to her and they canonically both resigned from the Navy together… in the scenario of a Purple Heart or any other wartime injury especially, I’d love to see how their dynamic addresses it… much untapped potential
