Song Review: Sierra Hull - “Movement 3” (Live at Studio 9)

As a musical piece, “Movement 3” is as exciting and imaginative as its title is not.

“M3” is the third of three movements on the Movements, the recently released studio document of Hull’s 2023 FreshGrass commission, which the mandolinist wrote, arranged and performed with her longtime bandmates, fiddler Avery Merritt, bassist Erik Coveney, drummer Mark Raudabaugh and guitarist Shaun Richardson.

The quintet recently convened for a live-in-studio rendition of the last “Movement” and managed to add a little extra spark to the aural instrumental firecracker. Brisk of tempo and outfitted with stops that allow for short drum and bass breaks, this “Movement 3” might be the most-powerful one yet.

Alas, it’s impossible to know as Sound Bites is, sadly, not on tour with Hull and the gang.
