Story:

His earliest memory was of Bearstar, his grandfather, burying a soft-blooded kit alive.

The kit was born snowy white, and Bearstar had taken it without a word of protest from its mother.

He had gestured for the then three-moon old Wolfhaze to watch as he told the kit why it was being disposed of.

“It won’t survive. Too light.” Bearstar grumbled, gently putting the kit into the hole.

“This way it can feed the land, instead of using up our resources.” He continued, starting to shovel in dirt.

Wolfhaze watched in horror as Bearstar finished burying the kit.

“That’s what we do to soft-bloods. Understood?”

Still not sure how he was meant to react, he had merely nodded.

As moons passed, food grew scarcer. More cats went missing, and when Wolfhaze finally completed his vigil, Bearstar was waiting.

“It’s time to move on from soft-bloods.” He said.

“Now we hunt bigger prey.”

Wolfhaze-- by now used to his grandfather’s instructions-- followed his orders to the letter.

Bearstar would bring the rogues to the meadow above camp, and Wolfhaze buried them.

That was the way it was.

Until it wasn’t, and Bearstar was killed.

Until his own grandson-- Mousethistle-- decided to leave the prairie for the forest.

Wolfhaze followed, of course. What else could he do?

He would always be there for Mouse.

Just as Bearstar was there for him.

Story:

Mousethistle was like his namesake-- timid.

Wolfhaze, his grandfather, tried to cure his ‘soft blood’ by making him help bury bodies, but all that did was give him nightmares.

When he hit his growth spurt and soon towered over the rest of his Clan, their hope was restored that he would bring honour to their family.

However, he disappointed them when he took a Thunderclan queen as his mate.

Lionstripe was demanding, but Mousethistle met her requests effortlessly, even joining her in Thunderclan, much to his grandmother, Beartooth’s disgust.

Wolfhaze made him dig more holes, bury more bodies.

It was at this time that Lionstripe had Lionkit.

Lionkit was the spitting image of her mother, and Mousethistle knew that he would have to impress Lionstripe so that she wouldn’t leave him.

She had mentioned an argument she had with Jaydusk, a queen with a litter of four, and Mousethistle set off to avenge his mate’s honour. He ripped into the queen and her kits that night, grooming his shell-shocked daughter before fleeing.

He went to Wolfhaze, seeking guidance. Wolfhaze, as expected, fell back on Plainclan’s code of retribution.

He instructed Mousethistle not to groom his pelt of fleas for six moons for every life he had taken.

Mousethistle took that advice, and even as he lay, drained of almost all his blood, he still wondered if he had been forgiven.
