as a barn hand working at night, I pointed the leaf blower at the rafters in the lesson barn to dislodge dust and then I found not dust, but a baby mouse in the pile. her eyes weren't even open yet, and I couldn't leave her there, so I felt responsible for her fate.

I knew she needed to be kept warm, but I really didn't know how warm. I loved her, but I didn't do enough to keep her alive. i'll never forget that.
the farrier's son said to me, "to some people, one mouse can be the whole world" and that was enough to convince me to give her my all instead of the two alternatives: release her close by to where I found her (and either die by cat or human) or surrender her at a vet or wildlife rehabilitation. I had already gotten attached and selfish. i'm so sorry
