basically where Japanese has three character sets (Hiragana, Katakana, Kanji), the Cepha language group just has two (Regular glyps, Kanji), where the regular glyphs take a higher priority than kanji usage especially in modern times. Some regions used kanji a little more frequently, some only used regular glyphs except in Very Special places, and of course the regular glyph set might be the “squid” set or the “octo” set depending on the region’s traditional species makeup...
the Current Standardized Language is squid glyph default, Kanji for Special Things (but teach some in schools for education’s sake), but historically things have been Complicated
