Motorcycle Memories Southeast Asia Clockwise From Top Left: 1. 1978: Me on my trusty 2 wheeled “steed” on a hillside in a rural area on the outskirts of Balikpapan, Kalimantan Timor (East Borneo), Indonesia. A favorite area because we could explore patches of jungle and get out into nature. 2. 1980: Me on my ride in Ubon Ratchathani, heading out to work at the Laotian Refugee Camp where I was teaching classes in English As A Second Language for refugees who were resettling in English speaking countries. 3. 1977: Me on a beach north of Balikpapan. We had great fun riding on the beach and exploring, getting a fresh young coconut from a vendor to quench our thirst on the cool coconut water and checking out mudskippers in the muddy area where a creek emptied into the ocean. Those amazing fish actually lived in and out of the water. 4. 1978: Me and my friend Dave after being hauled out of the mud on a logging road that went through the rainforest. That mud was unbelievable - it stuck and then with each rotation of the wheel another layer was added on top of the previous layer. Earlier in the year we had gone in before the rainy season and got to explore which was great fun. Sadly that whole stretch of rainforest has been lost to logging, human expansion and palm oil plantations.
