It had been over a year since that game of chess between Shadow and Gothel in the Palace Gardens. Since then, he had been moved from the palace and placed under the care of an assassin chosen personally by Queen Gothel, honing the skills he already had, and learning a few new ones as well. Tracking, hunting, and how to kill were the main areas he had been trained in, as well as building off of the basic combat he had already learnt. Occasionally Gothel had come by to check up on his training, and to teach him a couple of things herself, but she hadn’t come to see him for about 6 months now. He worried that she may have been a little disappointed with him for not learning quicker, but his teacher still said that he was learning quite quickly. It seemed that Shadow’s brief history being a thief helped with the stealthier parts of being an assassin, although his teacher was a bit worried that he was maybe a bit soft to actually kill anyone, and had obviously relayed this worry to the Queen.

Nevertheless, Shadow eventually finished his training, heading back to the Palace once he had been summoned by Queen Gothel of Corona, ready to start putting his skills to use for her benefit, as he eventually was lead to the throne room where Gothel was sat upon her throne, stepping up until he was about 10 feet in front of her, lowering himself onto one knee and bowing his head to show his loyalty to her. He was garbed in sturdy black clothing, with chain mail underneath them. The neck of his shirt could be pulled up to cover his nose and mouth, and he usually wore more on his head to conceal his identity, but he had been told to take them off in front of the Queen. His dark hair was a little shaggier and longer than it had been, but his ears still stood out in the mess of hair, standing proud, and his tail was threaded through a hole in the seat of his pants. He hadn’t grown too much, he was clearly much more confident in himself and his abilities than he had been a year ago.

Ok, so you remember that ask regarding Roxy earlier? Time to talk about what I meant when I said it’s hard to explain. You’ll have yo bear with me, it’s one of those ideas that I don’t quite have words for, but I will do my best.

Shadow doesn’t necessarily mind being used. This does extend to at least one of his other selves, the medieval Shadow in mothergothell’s Queen Gothel AU. Shadow doesn’t mind being used all that much. He does, however, want a little honesty. He wants to know what he’s doing. This is fairly straightforward. If Gothel told him to hunt down the Stabbington brothers, either to kill or capture them, that’s enough. He doesn’t want to be given vague instructions or to not know the reason why. Hunting down the Stabbington brothers already has a reason; they are criminals, they are dangerous and have been known to work with Flynn Rider in the past. I am using medieval Shadow as an example, but this basically holds true for the main verse as well.

So basically, if Roxy were simply using Shadow as a diversion, he’d understand why. She is in the far flung future, the only other human on Earth is far beyond her reach, and she needs a bit of human company. Shadow would understand that. He would also understand if she wanted a little romantic attention, although he wouldn’t go too far in that case.

The reason is the issue here. Shadow was under the impression that Roxy liked him too, and that is why she wanted to do said romantic things with him. Excluding their first kiss, which was because Roxy frazzled his brain with an unintended innuendo. Asking him what he was doing in a GIRL like her rather than in a PLACE like that. So she thought the old Sleeping Beauty thing might work. And it did. But yes, he thought she was legitimately interested in him and liked him, rather than being curious about romantic stuff and simply using him for that. He would have been happy to help if she had said so, but instead, assuming that ask is true, he at least feels she has led him on. Which is the hurtful thing.

Before I do it, I feel I should make it clear that I have no plans on shipping Shadow with Gothel. She’s a beautiful lady and all, but I don’t hate Shadow quite that much to push him into a romantic relationship with someone so manipulative.
