Canadian FS media usually comes across as really biased. They cried foul for Bourne and Kraatz from 1998 until they won worlds in 2003, even when their skating didn’t necessarily warrant it. Because there weren’t clear criteria for the technical elements (other than some timing and touching), they would always have some kind of an argument that B/K “wuz robbed.” IJS helped but they still took up the V/M and Marina abandonment narrative in 2014 (though the Finnstep argument fueled by Petri Kokko was the one that should have been highlighted more). It’s not surprising that, with admittedly iffy judging, they are going to bat for Piper and Paul. Honestly, I don’t think it will help them at all. It usually comes across as poor sportsmanship and never seems to result in the outcome the teams (or reporters) want.
it seems like there are a very few individual reporters/writers who keep an eye on figure skating, and then the bigger media outlets who are more interested in figure skating only for the headline stories or fluff - VM in 2018 were big enough to be both. Piper and Paul have been around long enough that they get some attention, the skaters who make it to the Olympics will get some as well? it just seems rare that there's real reporting or interviews with any depth or a follow up question in sight
yeah i was kind of surprised about B/K - what little i saw later of the way they were presented in the media from back then, i had a different impression of their stature. i don't think media that's only seen in your country (except by the few diehard skating fans) is going to affect the outcome of international skating unless they have some kind of expose
