I read that in a few years Harmony Gold will lose the rights to Robotech.. did Southern Cross and Next Generation originally come from Japan also? I know that Robotech was HG's mashup version of Macross.. I dislike the idea that HG attempted to "dumb-down" the saga for the US but me being an American would not have come across these Legendary stories as a child if it wasn't brought to Network TV all those years ago
Hey Anon; yes, the other two parts of Robotech were also Japanese series from the same era. Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross was produced by Big West and Tatsunoko just like SDF Macross. They also made a third āSuper Dimensionā series, SD Century Orguss, but that one was a little too weird so the third generation of Robotech is instead made from an even less related Tatsunoko production, Genesis Climber Mospeada.
And yeah, Robotech has plenty of problems, but it definitely helped get a lot of fans into anime over here which is always a good thing and eventually led to the real import market. That sort of adaptation was just what we had to deal with back in the day. Heck, one of my first anime experiences was Warriors of the Wind, an absolutely terrible adaptation of Miyazakiās Nausicaa, but the artistry of the original still shines through.
Another very tangentially Macross-related thing from DragonCon, I went to a few panels with mechanical designer and director Shinji Aramaki - thatās him on the left in the fuzzy top picture. He worked on Mospeada and Megazone 23, both of which became part of the Robotech universe, as well as a ton of toys that were integrated into the Transformers line and many other shows.
Basically any time you saw a cool transforming or weaponized motorcycle from the 80s or 90s, that was his work! Mospeadaās Cyclones, Megazoneās Garland, Bubblegum Crisisā moto-slaves, etc. Dude really likes bikes. In fact, the reason Mospeada even has transforming jets at all is because the studio wanted them due to Macrossās success. Aramaki also said that Kawamori was a designer he always looked up to. He was also very excited that some of his designs that were beyond current toy technology in the 80s, like the Garland and the Motoslave, are now getting real transforming toy releases.
This is only tangentially related to Macross, but I figure some of your followers might like to know that Amazon Prime has Super Dimension Cavalry Souther Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada in addition to the original Macross series.
