Something inside Ares had snapped after his confinement.
Even the fact of his darkest imaginings being ultimately false could not save his mind. The brightness of Olympus that had once kept hope alive now just made his stomach turn. Few had truly missed him, and life had seemingly gone on well without him. Prospered in some ways. He was here, rotting from the inside and everyone else was just...happy and with life as normal.
He could not stay in a place like this. Not even Love could convince him. Not even Death. So he had left. He had packed himself supplies - his war tent and its belongings - and he had left with no destination in mind.
Earth also had become calm, but it was foreign enough in the right place that that felt right. By now he felt at home with discomfort.
At first he had just remained in his tent in the middle of nowhere and just...existed. But though his body was tired, his mind raced with memories from that dark place and so he needed to move. Keep moving.
That became his mantra then. He abandoned his tent on what he thought would be a walk of a few hours...
No longer did he even remember he had a tent. All he knew was the eroding sandals on his feet, the robes on his body and the sword wedged into his leather belt. Oh and the sun hat a kind woman had given him...when had she given it? He couldn't remember when that had happened. He had stayed in so many homes over time now. A traveller, that was all.
A traveller on his own, but lately a younger man in true traveller's garbs had been joining him on some longer, isolated, stretches of his walks. Appearing at one junction or the next, leaning against the stone statue he knew not the name of.
Talked a load of nonsense too.
About how the traveller had been walking a long time (obviously). About some family he was supposed to be going home to (he had no family, nothing beyond the roads). Even at one point about how Death would be pleased to find him. At that point the traveller had pointed his sword at the man's face and asked him if that was a threat. The younger one just laughed and seemingly vanished.
Maybe he was just an illusion of the road. There were plenty of animals about, plenty of stories. Perhaps plenty of vanishing men.
A robed woman appeared a day after the vanishing man then, spoke to him as he walked past. Seemed stunned for some reason that he just tipped his hat and walked on.
"I have no money if that is what you're asking of me. All I can give you is a greeting." He says to her, turning and now walking backwards as he briefly spoke to her.
"Or are you lost? I could give directions. With your complexion I'd say you aren't meant for the road."
She was too pale. The sun would burn her fair and beautiful skin.
