I've been here for like a year but I have no idea what mortifer is. Would you mind explaining?
Hey that’s alright!Mortifer is my oldest story I’ve completed! It’s an anime-style webcomic, and its got a ton of plot holes and the world doesn’t exactly make the most sense? But Mortifer TAUGHT me how to write, and the writing in the second half of the story STILL haunts me when I read it. Like, Mortifer being made, is what made me be able to string together plot lines in large stories, and Mortifer ALONE taught me how to write very complex characters, specifically through the character of Joey.Joey is one of my absolute favorite characters I’ve ever written. He’s very complex and FASCINATING, and tragic, and drawing this story REALLY pushed my storytelling to the limits, and I have almost exclusively HIM to thank for it.I look back and see all the plot holes and problems, but the good stuff later in the story is SO GOOD, that I see this comic and simply find myself being extremely proud of what I was able to create during that stage of my life. It’s pretty dark, but wow. I knocked a ton of shit out of the park. I was re-reading the story a while back, and it had been so long that I forgot how some things concluded. AND I WAS JUST PLOWING THROUGH THE STORY. I was horrified, wondering what the HECK was gonna happen next! Sure I remembered the FINAL ending, but what did I do to get them there??I will never stop being proud of Mortifer. Never. Some artists look back and cringe at their old stuff, but I look at it like a series of lessons. It would be unfair to create 1400+ pages of comics and then cringe when I see them, even if there are cringeworthy things in there. I put a lot of love in that thing, mistakes and all.
Oh dang I guess this whole ‘publishing my oldest work ever made Mortifer’ thing is actually going to be underway. I’m-- quite excited about this, to be honest. We’re at SUPER EARLY STAGES, but, I’m working things out right now, just know for those who read and loved it, its definitely going to be a while, but the plans are LAID. Mortifer is comin back out in print! EDIT: Also as an aside, the books on the website currently, I make zero money off of. It’s from a company that I lost my account to, and they won’t remove the books or anything, because I cant access that old email. So. Also the series is incomplete on there, while I will have ALL the books published on this new one! So, yep! Also, the books will be in omnibus’s, so the entire 1400 or so pages should fit into 3 large volumes!
Can you please link me all of the comics you've made? I want to read the one with the character that wears an eye patch (and has blue hair, I think. Love your art btw!)
Sure! Its pretty old, but here it is!http://mortifer.smackjeeves.com/
So, I think it's pretty neat that Joey is being reused (he was my fav in Mortifier). But, I was thinking... how did Parsley and Niak get the eyepatch? I mean, I don't think all three of them went to hell, lost and eye, and went back. Or is that something to be said in the comics?
Each of em are gonna have their own stories behind the eyepatch. Also yes, I adore Joey and even with Mortifer long finished, I miss him very much. So of course I’m throwing him into everything I write, apparently. The primary thing with Joey that will remain, is his overall personality. Different events in his life might sway him into different interests or jobs, ect ect, but overall, its still Joey.

Do you have a link to the mortifier comic?? I:d love to read it :0
Sure! Here it is!Some things to note:I started this in High SchoolIts over 1000 pages, and completeand it really hurtsAlso one of the characters is showing up in Lucidia, which is neat.Forgive it of any of its plot holes, I was stumbling through it at first, even with its problems, I’m still actually quite proud of the final product.Â
Ok, I just started reading Mortifier and now I'm at chapter 28. My thoughts: HOLY SHITE THIS IS THE BEST COMIC EVER WHY DONT PEOPLE READ IT?????
Omg wow, reading my original stuff! I am DANG GLAD you’re enjoying it.Frankly, I’ve considered republishing it, but I got so much GV to publish....I also looked back to some old pages and screamed at it, too. I forgot some of the stuff that happened and I was legitimately surprised and/or horrified!Keep Mortifer in mind when I write Lucidia.
Would you ever want to rewrite Mortifer if you could? Not to make the story drastically different but to fix the plot holes to make it more consistent.
Nope!Mortifer sure has a ton of mistakes, but the simple truth is, it guided me to figuring out the kind of stories I love to write. Interesting characters in interesting universes! And truth be told, Mortifer’s world is not interesting. Some of its characters certainly are! But I’d rather write worlds far more strange and surreal, or separate from our own. I LOVE doing that.
