Registration Number NAS 255) MORRIS ALBUM www.flickr.com/photos/45676495@N05/albums/72157623690377489 In 1922 Austin had changed the British motor car landscape with the arrival of the Austin Seven, Morris two popular models the Oxford and the Cowley were larger vehicles and took a major sales hit, together with the little Austin opening up a hitherto untapped market. Morris response was a refinance that enabled the company more development money and increased production capacity and by 1928 the Morris Minor was launched as a viable rival to the Seven. The Minor was a more complex car its new Morris engine was designed by Wolseley, by this time also personally owned by William Morris. It was largely a new design but following a conventional Wolseley SOHC front camshaft drive concept if much smaller than any existing Wolseley unit. The overhead camshaft was driven by a vertical spiral bevel geared shaft that passed through the dynamo carrying the armature. A single SU carburettor was fitted and coil ignition used. The engine produced 20 bhp for a top speed of 55 mph. The Morris Minor's engine was produced in two versions 1928-30 all the cars had an 847 cc overhead-camshaft engine designed and made by Wolseley, which then remained available for the more expensive Minors until 1932. Morris's in-house engineers led by Percy Rose, who had designed the chassis, devised a simpler valve train for the same block. This more conventional side-valve unit of slightly lower power output entered production in late 1930 under the supervision of the young Leonard Lord Initially for the lower-priced cars — first for the £100 car, later for others — it remained in production until 1934. Morris' big seller of the 1930's and the model that turned the company around. The engine is a Morris copy of the Ford 8hp unit, but improved in detail, with a three bearing crank, mated to a three speed gearbox. The series I designation was used from June 1935 in line with other Morris models, cars made before this are known as pre-series although the official Morris Motors designation was by the model year (35) even though they were introduced in October 1934 The attractive body also closely resembled the Ford, the Tourer sold for £ 120 when new and helped the Eight capture the public imagination with 20,000 sales. From Summer 1933 the cars were updated with Hardy-Spicer Universal Joints replacing fabric joints. In September 1934 the bare chassis was offered for £95, For buyers of complete cars prices ranged from £118 for the basic two-seater to £142 for the four door saloon while "sunshine" roof and leather seats, with bumpers and indicators £2 10 shillings (£2.50) extra. The Series 2 of 1938 incorporated cosmetic changes to keep the Eight in line with the Norris family , painted radiator shells, Easiclean wheels and bodies now in a single colour, but still with black wings unlike other 1938 Morris cars. The Series II stuck with the same running gear as before but remained a strong seller. Diolch am 99,060,633 o olygiadau gwych, mae pob un ohonynt yn cael eu gwerthfawrogi'n fawr.
