Just finished reading Normal people by sally Rooney, here are my thoughts :
1. Both Connell and Marianne needed to be in therapy not in a relationship
2. Connell cheated on Helen with Marianne and it is never addressed once.
3. Both Connell and Marianne are really avoidant people, no wonder it didn’t work out between them.
4. Marianne going on a rant about how she sees no point in working, and money is just something invented by society, and that she hates capitalism, while being one of the people who benefit from the system, honestly seemed very out of touch from reality. She is so socially aware about other political stuff, it almost seemed out of character for her. She claims to be fighting for the people, and is very sad that she will never be able to fight systemic injustices, and probably end up helping only a small amount of people——which won’t matter anyway, but then she goes ahead and says money is just a societal construct? Like, yeah so are the systemic injustices that you want to fight against, doesn’t make them any less real. For most people, working is not an option when they need money to survive in this world.
5. Connell and Marianne’s relationship is so special to me, I love them so much. Rooney’s writing style is a little unconventional, but the way she is writes domestic scenes is just so exquisite.
Overall though, I still really loved the book. It was such a good examination of grief and growth. I actually cried when I finished it. And the new york ending….ughhh.
Honey , you should see me in a crown ;)
