Firstly, it’s so useful bc it limits your characters concerns in a realistic way. Sure, some people fight for a grand cause and are preoccupied by ideology for most of their decision, but a lot of us are 1000 times more motivated be concerned with small things and relationships.

For example, every major player, protagonist, antagonist, everyone in between, in my novels is self destructively obsessed with their current or ex girlfriends. Sure, their actions will probably leave a lot of San Francisco Bay Area changed for good, but they’re all doing it bc they’re either trying to keep an ex girlfriend safe, win them back, destroy them, or prove themselves to them.

Secondly, vitally important for action characters bc you what takes time away from learning how to emotionally regulate, feeding yourself, hygiene, social skill? Honing your skills at the blade or magical tome or whatever. Fromsoft learned this when they made their superhuman ninja boy a middle aged single dad who is shocked when he has cooked rice for the first time st age 40.

Thirdly, it really helps when you are struggling to create a scene. The first time we see the protagonist’s house in my novel clicked into place when I realized that at age 30 she was a mattress in the corner type person who thinks instant coffee and a Luna bar are a great breakfast. Which of your many options are you trying to show the loser side of? The answers will move you along at a clip I garuntee

Lastly, it’s healing! Have characters with the flaws you want think you have! Write other characters falling in love with them despite or bc of this! My main polycule is basically if all the things I hate about myself were people, and it’s done wonders to think how someone would fall for them despite these things.
