At left, the sign on the curb by the Burke Drug Store is advertising Clarence Brown’s Wonder of Women that was showing at the Alva Theater. It starred Lewis Stone, Peggy Wood, and Leila Hyam. Adjoining the drug store are The Carolina Stores, Piggly Wiggly and a 5 and 10 Cents Store. In the background at the right is the Alva Theater and Claywell Funeral Home. Other businesses on the right include Standard Motor Company, R. L. Lentz Shoe Shop, Gibbs Shoe Shop, and an optometrist’s office.

Burke County, North Carolina- Located on West Union Street in Morganton, this gorgeous home was built circa 1895. It is a one-and-one-half story, frame, hip-roofed, Queen Ann cottage; gabled dormers; bellcast dormer simulating a tower; hip-roofed wraparound porch with pedimented entrance and engaged gazebo.

Built in 1892, this classic Queen Anne style home on 411 West Union Street in Morganton in Burke County , North Carolina is an architectural gem. Known as the Dr. Riddle House, it is associated with Dr. Joseph Bennett Riddle (1870-1947) who was a prominent Morganton physician and first local surgeon in Burke County, NC.
The home has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1984. It has 4 beds, 4 baths, and the main level has 2561 square feet and the upper level has 1,218 giving. A total of 3,779 heated square feet. The rooms include a living room, parlor, dining room, family room, office, and a sun room. The lower level has a rec room, family room and a half bath.
