Gi-hun didnt NEED to die, sure it made sense story wise to have his final act in the story be one of sacrifice but then what was the point of the season at all? At the end of the first season Gi-hun learns that the games are continuing again and decides to abandon his plans to see his daughter and go put an end to the games once and for all. It’s the exact same message that evil will continue everywhere and the world is a capitalist hellscape that the lower class will suffer under forever, but at least it had a somewhat hopeful ending. Season 3 ends with the island exploding, but that would’ve happened anyway since the coast guard was coming to the island, and everyone was evacuated. The VIPS wouldn’t stay a second longer once they knew they might get caught, and since they were leaving what would be the point of continuing the games? It just seems awfully convenient that there was one final player at the very end and then the island blew up. If you wanted a “realistic” ending, the games would be over before the final act because everyone would’ve high tailed out of there at the first sign of trouble. Also, myung- gi not stepping on the button seems like such a cop out considering it forced gi-hun into that decision. Sure you could say that gi-hun surviving is a total asspull “Hollywood” type happy ending, and not everyone wants to see that, and that’s fine that’s just your personal taste. But I think most people agree that the conclusion of Gi-hun’s arc would have been much more satisfying if he was able to reunite with his daughter in person, not In-ho (the orchestrator of all his suffering) and fulfill the promise of giving her the gift he’s had since the very first season, while also maybe showing a scene of the squid game continuing in America. It would’ve continued the theme of a bleak but hopeful ending. I think most people dislike how the final season felt like an advertisement for a spin off American squid games, especially with the cameo at the end.
