Today I made a shirt out of an old piece of my mom's from her hippie phase ("I probably wore it braless," she said once, with a note of scorn for her past, slutty self), worn as a dress throughout my childhood and early adolescence but basically gross because it is so threadbare and the skirt was covered in mysterious tea-looking stains. I cut off the bottom, just a couple inches below the waistline, and it's a cute hippie crop top!
The necklace is actually an icon of Saraswati, the goddess of cool shit like writing and music and knowledge. My uncle Reid, who's visiting from India, gave it to me yesterday at a family shindig. He's affectionately known as the "monkle" (monk+uncle, geddit?) among family, because he lives in an ashram in the mountains of India and practices Transcendental Meditation.
