it's genuinely so stupid how white LGBT people will assume their problems in American or British life are the only problems that matter, that theyβre the WORST problems. they also like to assume that the gay people in places like Qatar are included in their activism by default because they assume they face the same level of oppression and violence, when we have the privilege to throw a fucking gay pride parade. American and british homophobia/transphobia is serious, but we cannot let it speak over formal discrimination in the rest of the world, especially where people are suffering comparatively a lot more than we are.
americans and brits are so quick to complain that their own countries are THE absolute worst. or, on the contrary, that their countries are THE most advanced. truth be told this is just plain old white supremacy. countries like Kenya are genuinely no different from the U.K. in terms of societal progression, functioning under virtually the same basic system (arguably less corrupt), but they donβt want you to recognise that fact because countries like Kenya aren't white-dominated, and thereby such countries do not gain much global power, at all. on the flip side, political corruption and formal discrimination in countries like Qatar and Lebanon are FAR more severe and genuinely life-or-death than they are in countries like the U.S. but god forbid your LGBT activism focuses on non-white people - they donβt want you to think about it. this white supremacist society wants a system in which white people are the only ones considered, and all people of other races are simply disregarded as less important.
i want to be clear that i'm not here to deny that world powers like the U.S. and U.K. play a HUGE role in the oppression and suffering that other countries' governments administer, we can see this very clearly in situations like the ongoing Iran war, but that doesn't mean the world powers are THE only factor - that idea strips other countries of their autonomy and their conscious choices to oppress. the U.S. government being bad does not mean that Iranian government is good, for instance.
anyway what i'm trying to say is that white americans and white british people - among others, but primarily this demographic - have a lot of unpacked, subconscious white supremacy to unlearn, and that this narrative of countrues like the US and UK necessarily being more important than the rest of the world is a very deliberate, systemic ploy created by a group of manipulative oppressors in hopes to cement fundamental racism in our world. fight back.
