âOut front [of the Civic Center Convention Hall in Philadelphia], thousands of fervent young bodies pushed avidly against each other, police and any passing black limousine hoping for a glimpse of the four men. Why? âBecause I LOVE them,â moaned 15-year-old Dee Darey, of 9220 Horatio Rd. âTheyâre so great. Theyâre my favorites. The Beatles? Oh, theyâre so out, very below. They make a different impression.â âYeah!â bellowed another girl behind her, âthey turned into a bunch of nuts.â [âŚ] â[The Monkees are] beautiful, theyâre talented and theyâre cute,â said Pat Bookford, 14, of 7649 Elmwood Ave., tossing her long brown hair decisively. âAnd,â said Janet OâNeill, also 14, of 7651 Elmwood Ave., âthey donât scream like some other dumb groups.â âYeah,â said Pat, âthe Beatles â they grew beards and mustaches and got creepy.â âI still like them, though,â said Janet. âI think the psychedelic bit is boss.â The crowd grew and grew. Now and then one scream would rise above the others. â[Davy] Jones is gorgeous!â âPeter Tork has a dimple!ââ - article by Judy Oppenheimer, Philadelphia Daily News, July 24, 1967
