***SWIPE for photo series The Mongoose. Tom McEwen was a super hero before there were mega movies about super heroes. His “rivalry” with Don “The Snake” Prudhomme is now legendary and plays a significant part in drag racing history. With Tom’s passing earlier this year we continue to lose incredible people who have influenced several generations. I am sad that I did not have a chance to do a portrait sitting with Mr. McEwen and I am working on ways to arrange portraits with Mr. Prudhomme and others in the near future so that I don’t miss these opportunities again. . . . At Mr. McEwen’s memorial at the Pomona Fairplex many, many great people gathered to pay their respects. It was a beautiful and touching memorial with really funny stories and so many memories shared. In front of the event center Mr. McEwen’s drag car sat quietly as if in mourning. It caught my attention and after hearing so many stories I wandered outside while it was still quiet. Sitting and looking at a car like this for a while you start to notice details and simple beauty in her shapes and curves. In honor of Tom and his contribution to racing this short look at this legendary car is my small attempt to share some of the magic that this man and his car gave to the world. RIP Mr. McEwen. This past July I was able to attend a memorial for the late Tom McEwen. While the memorial service was beautiful and many incredible people with deep histories in drag racing were there I was very drawn to this dragster sitting quietly alone in front of the building while everyone was inside. I spent a little time just sitting and looking at details and found so much beauty in this car. It is amazing that something this powerful, fast and loud was sitting so peacefully in repose.
