#monastery bells

kind of haunting, but absolutely breathtaking

There seems to be something so captivating about bells, not just to the human ear, but to the human spirit. The resonance touches us on a deeper level that mere audio. I love that the SSJE monastery incorporates bells in their day as well. Even secular bells are great. For a long time I lived behind Cambridge City Hall, and the bells in that tower would ring out every hour for most all of the day. I suspect some folks in the neighborhood were not so enthralled by it as I was, but thankfully, it continues to this day. And in truth there were some days when I wanted to sleep in or was hungover when I did not react with spiritual wonder at the beautiful bells. The bells in this selection are from an Orthodox monastery in Boston under the jurisdiction of the Holy Orthodox Church in North America. I love Br. Geoffrey’s bell-like repetition in his meditation….”faithful is he who calls”. In sitting with this, it offered an insight to frame prayer during times of frustration as a way to test, and thus, strengthen, my faith. Our timing is tainted by our desires, and those desires do not always line up with God’s timing or reasoning. So, we must remain faithful. And call. And heed the call. And listen.
