Dinner at Angelo's (One-shot, Rating G)
Post-The Sign of Three spoilers.Â
Mollydoescount aka Bencumber prompted me to do something based on this post. I tried love, I tried (aka I am theprivatelifeofsherlockholmes if there is any confusion).Â
âOh John â lovely to see you â whereâs Sherlock?â said Angelo who was still donning a ponytail eyeing his wife Mary, as theyâd just taken off their coats stepping inside the restaurant.
John frowned as he settled down by a table, âThis is my wife Mary, actually.â
âOh â oh â right - hello,â said the man rather flustered, âWell â well â itâs on the house!â
They were soon seated, menus and glasses of water handed out, while John tried to ignore answering any of Angeloâs questions concerning âSherlockâ.
Mary however was grinning at him wickedly, hidden behind her menu, but the second Angelo wandered off Johnâs bubble burst - âDonât,â he said with a stern voice, as she broke out in laughter making him soften instantly. Â Â
âDoes everyone think youâre gay? Since pretty much all the shops near Baker Street are filled with people asking about your boyfriend,â she said in a low voice before adding, âThough sometimes it does feel like I am married to two men, minus the-,â
He grimaced, âGod â no â donât - oh shut up, or Iâll-,âÂ
âYou already have,â she said, âSo â bringing me to the restaurant you and Sherlock had your first date in? Fun.â
He snorted, closing the menu before him shut as he said, âYouâre really not helping, anyway like I said â you know â there was the womanâŠbut I just donât think heâs built that way.â
âWhat â way?â said Mary with raised brows.
âYou know, heâs kind of â well â heâs not â he can barely talk to people in general without it having to be about murders and stuff, so I canât actually imagine him having a girlfriend,â he said taking a sip of his wine.
âOk, letâs just imagine he had a girlfriend â what kind of woman would that be?â
âI really hope youâre not suggesting-,â
âJanine? Oh no, she didnât fancy him at all, thought he was nice, except he seemed to be-,â
Angelo reappeared at their table, and John noted that they hadnât received a candle, âHave you two decided then?â
âErr â yes-,â said John smiling, giving their order, and upon receiving it Angelo muttered something indistinctively, âSorry â what was that?âÂ
âOh well, err -,â said the man clearing his voice, âSherlock brought a woman years agoâŠobviously to prove a point as wellâŠand believe me-,â
âWhat?â said John gaping.
Somehow Mary hadnât at all been surprised when Angelo announced that a sweet woman named Molly had accompanied Sherlock to disastrous effect. The evening ended with her sitting alone, eating a large size of complimentary chips, when Sherlock had to handle a case (which sounded more like an excuse due to nerves according to Mary).Â
John couldnât understand how it wasnât amazing that his best friend who at large was âmarried to his workâ had gone on an actual date with an actual woman, except the bit with him having left of course. He wasnât a stranger to suddenly looking at the end of the table in the middle of a meal to find the man had vanished, but it still counted as a âdateâ. Considering everything somehow it wasnât entirely mad that Sherlock was interested in Molly. After all they had a lot in common, and he used to spend a lot of time at St Bartâs beforeâŠexcept after Mollyâs engagement.Â
His smugness was short-lived when Mary pointed out that Janine had more or less spotted Sherlock staring daggers at Mollyâs fiancĂ© Tom, while keeping an eye on the woman in yellow most of the evening, âShe wondered a bit about that really. He didnât once go and talk to her, kept his distance â and she didnât realise until she knew Molly was engaged.â
âHeâs been going on about engaged women being off-limits lately.â
âDo you thinkâŠâ it lingered in the air, the idea that his best mate had finally become very human. He had always been human, but it was the first time Sherlock seemed to acknowledge that he was.
âIf he isâŠI donât think me talking to him would help,â said John clearing his throat awkwardly.
âYouâre actually nervous, arenât you?â
âThat if he gets a girlfriend he might only bring her to cases, instead of you.â
âWell â he already did that with Molly, and he actually â,â
âYouâve gotten married and you still havenât forgotten him! Look â we â even went to Angeloâs tonight, and youâve said that youâve been worried heâd get lonelyâŠA girlfriend would be a good thing. He has to grow up at some point.â
âExcept Mollyâs engaged, isnât she? And she even seems happyâŠno wonder heâs been keeping his distance lately.â
Maryâs smile dropped, remerging again as she said, âI donât suppose Tomâs an evil mastermind either, is he?â
âNo, Sherlock checked,â said John, before he laughed, âGod, heâs been so bloody obvious. He knows Tomâs name, but he never ever remember Gregâs â even asking Molly for help about the stagâŠHe actually properly fancies her-,âÂ
âNot that it helps him much in this case with her being engaged, and all-,â
âNo, I suppose notâŠsoâŠI better not say anything?â
âLetâs just wait and see what happensâŠâ
âSherlock! John! How lovely to see you here â itâs been ages-,â said Angelo in his booming voice, shaking Sherlock by the hand enthusiastically.Â
âYes, it has,â said Sherlock smirking, âAngelo, you remember Molly?â Â
