Another day filled to the brim with information and creation. Learning all about Modular Level Design from the Pros. After watching an hour from 2 of the Bethesda team talk at GDC, you can see how much time it saves in the whole Game Design Process.

How did we put this method into practice?

We made something called a ‘Kit’. ^ A series of objects that can be placed in (almost) anyway and interact smoothly with each other. Like little Lego Sets at the fingertips of the Level Designer. Fun and Practical.

After making a greybox of a setting of our choice (I chose to make a library), one-by-one the placeholders were imported into Maya and made into proper models. To then be exported back into Unity.

Given 2.5 hours, the task was to make as many elements as possible and still have them in semi-functioning level/environment.

I enjoy this whole exercise so much, and really felt like my little Library had more to offer than the standard ‘Lambert’ texture, so I took it home and polished it off.
