headcanon; mifune was married, but his wife was killed. even more so, she was 3 months pregnant with his child. maybe the reason he cares for kids is to protect them, so he doesn't lose them like he lost his family.
This is devious, hitting the feels where they’re going to hurt, especially since Mifune has a pretty sad ending already :’)
But what if:
Mifune’s wife was able to give birth, able to give life to their darling child, except, she started to fall to madness and evil, turning into a p-kishin and mifune and his child watched it all happen. Before Mifune could slay her though, she took the life of their kid. And so Mifune lives away from all the rest of the world until he meets Angela.
