8 weeks later, 1. many of our censures for being selfish weren’t far from the truth, but not in completing tasks. Self-preservation was the name of the game for the first 2/3s of the course, and none more evident than whilst we were deciding who the Brunei MO would be.  TLDR; Drs, despite what our profession suggests about our altruism, can be amongst the most selfish people, and they can be rather clever/manipulative about it. 2. Despite I was told, I have learnt very little more about leadership than I already know. However, I have had the privilege to have an excellent PC who models the way everyday in the form of PC Shoban. We had learnt at least 3 models of leadership, but they are a faint scrawl on my cranial canvas; the clear consistent demonstration of servant leadership is a very present presence.  This is my takeaway.  3. I feel fitter than I have ever been, even in BMT/SISPEC, and I have Edwin, Daniel and the rest of the Krav Maga instructors to thank for helping me start off on a good footing.  4. I am actually an introvert. In a course of 56 individuals who are a) male b) in their 20s c) residents and leaders d) trained to think they are right as part of the job e) doctors, I have felt the most comfortable being a shadow.  While everyone jostles for prominence in the course, I have found my settling in being quiet and observant, somewhat of a wallflower. Prominence here is temporal, achievements and appointments are soon relegated to a figment of memory, perhaps to be dredged up only at 10- and 20- year reunions. What is truly remembered, what is truly permanent, is the part we play in each others’ lives, the real part. I have had the privilege to get to know my buddy in a deep way, as he shares his career, marriage and family concerns. We have prayed and talked and encouraged and raged, and we have formed something special that will last beyond MOCC. And that is what I have chosen to invest in.  5. I have also learnt how to count my fucks and give them carefully.  I don’t know where I’ll go after this course, and this coming week is extremely unnerving. Whether I end up a commando, I’ll leave that to God.
