The Girl, Finally
A/N- Â Just a fluffy idea I had for Rebecka and Magnus. Ehjoy!
It was a long time coming, longer than he ever imagined. He watched her, every part of her face familiar to him, like a cherished prize, so often gazed at, and admired. When she turned to him and smiled, his heart swelled in his chest. He smiled at her, the little girl, her niece, sitting on her lap and playing with her hair.
He remembered being 5 years old and seeing her in the shops with her family, her long golden hair in pigtails hanging over her shoulders. Her teeth were too big for her mouth, her front teeth looking like a prized rabbits teeth. She took the last two cinnamon swirls and he was angry about it. They were his favorite, and this little bratty girl from Stockholm took the last of them. He narrowed his eyes at her as she past him, but she just smiled, having no idea that she had just ruined the little blond curly haired boys day. She smiled at him and he didn’t smile back, instead he said under his breath, “betyda flicka” and she snapped her head around to look at him. He crossed his arms over his chest and refused to look at her.
He remembered being 10 and swimming on the lake in the hot summer sun after riding his bike down into town for groceries for his mother. She was swimming too, only she never went far from in front of her house, but Magnus swam all over the lake. He could avoid her easily enough, but he kept stopping to watch her. She dove under the water came back up, over and over again, like a mermaid would in a movie. He watched her body bend and dive and then break the surface of the water, so full of grace and style, as he just clumsily stayed on top of the water. He watched her and narrowed his eyes at her, “snorkig flicka,” he said but he couldn’t stop watching her.
He remembered being 15 and seeing her at the movies. She was sitting one row in front of him and he could see her in side profile as they waited for the movie to start. She felt him looking at her and she turned and smiled at him, raising her hand to him in greeting. He blushed and raised his hand a tiny bit to her, then he paniced thinking maybe she was waving to someone behind him, so he looked away, swallowing hard and wishing he could just disappear. He looked up when he was sure she wasn’t looking at him and he watched her reading a book while they waited for the movie to begin. She had flung her long hair over the seat back and it had gotten tangled in a screw on the back of her seat. He sat for a full 3 minutes wondering if he should untangle it for her. He would like nothing more than to touch her long golden hair, but he might have to speak to her if he did. When he finally decided he had better untangle it he reached over and unwound the silky hair from its trap. Unfortunately , she felt something tugging on her hair and she turned to see him playing with it and she pulled away causing him to pull her hair inadvertently. He blushed and let go of the strand of hair, “förlåt.” He said quietly but didn’t tell her he was just freeing her hair. She moved her hair over her shoulder and turned away from him for a minute, hiding her own blush. Magnus was just about to get up and leave, now completely humiliated, when she turned to him and introduced herself.
“Jag är Rebecka, och du är?”
“Magnus…jag är Magnus.” He swallowed hard, her voice was prettier than he had thought it would be, sort of high and light, a little like a song.
“Do you live across the lake?” she asked him as she turned in her seat to look at him and closed her book.
“Yes…I…sorry about your hair, it was tangled…” Magnus was making motions nervous motions with his hand and when he realized her blushed again and put his hand into his lap. She smiled at him.
“Tack.”
She looked down, deciding what she should do. There was no one sitting next to him. She stood up from her seat and moved back a row, sitting in the seat next to him. He looked at her. His eye brows raising in shock and surprise.
“That chair didn’t like me, or my hair. I hope it’s okay to sit here…” she could feel her heart race at being so close to him. This was out of character for her, but she had known this boy by sight all her life, but he never talked to her, so she figured it was up to her.
He only nodded his head and smiled shyly. They talked about the movie, about the weather, about his school and hers. They watched the movie and after it ended she smiled at him, the most radiant smile.
“So, I’ll see you around, maybe swimming tomorrow?” she said as she walked away. Magnus couldn’t sleep that night thinking about seeing her swimming the next day. But he didn’t He had work and then he was cooking for his family and he stayed away from the lake and swimming until he was sure she was gone back to Stockholm. He looked at her house across the lake and said to himself, “vacker flicka.”
The next summer she was back, and she was more beautiful than the last summer. Magnus was swimming on the lake and heading toward the platform when he saw her there. She was laying on the platform, the sun heating up her perfect skin, her body filling out a small white lace bikini. He couldn’t… but as he turned she was calling to him.
“Hej! Magnus, hur mår du?”
He stopped at the sound of her voice and he swam to the platform. He stayed on the ladder, his arms crossed on the platform as he looked at her.
“I’m very well…Rebecka…another summer…”
She rolled over toward him and smiled. Her body now fully in his view. He felt a lump in his throat and a hardening in his swim shorts.
He stayed on the ladder, not daring to get onto the platform with her, he couldn’t. They talked and then he asked her to swim with him for a bit, hoping the exercise would distract him from her full breasts and that small triangle of lace covering her…
She smiled and stood, she glowed like early morning sunlight. His breath caught in his throat as he watched her gracefully dive into the water and then come up, her hair floating in the water like golden sea weed.
“Come on!” she said with a smile and then swam quickly away.
“Farlig flicka,” he said as he shook his head and followed after her. It was a good summer that year.
But then she wasn’t back the next year, she had gotten sick and the doctor ordered her to stay in Stockholm, relegated to her room and he own bed, no fun, no lake house, no Magnus. Her sister found him and told him, with just a little too much enthusiasm. He wasn’t a fan of her sister.
Then he was 20 and only back in Trollhattan for a weekend, but she was there, sitting on the dock, reading a book and napping in the sun. There was a man there with them that year. He was tall, he was dark haired and Magnus watched as he ccame up behind Rebecka and enfolded her as she read, wrapping his body around her.
Magnus could feel his heart break in his chest as he watched from across the lake. He could hear her laugh echo off the water as the man tickled her and then she was turning and kissing him, melting into him, and Magnus had to walk away. He was there to see his family anyway…and it wasn’t as if he had no one. There was a girl in Malmo, she was pretty, and he liked her, and she let him do things to her, and she did things to him…so why should he feel like this? He left in two days time, resolute to not think about the beautiful Rebecka Lindahl again.
But now he was 25, sitting in her parents living room, her sisters oldest daughter in Rebecka’s lap, and he finally felt like he was ready.  He had waited far too long, let far too many opportunities pass him by. He scooted next to her as she put the little girl down an she tottered into the next room leaving them alone.
He moved her hair over her shoulder as she looked up at him, the same smile on her face as when she was a 5 year old girl.
“Are you alright Magnus?” she asked as she touched his face gently.
“Yes, yes, I’m finally alright…” he said as he leaned in to kiss her.
Rebecka held still, only moving her hand up to hold his face. Her lips met his and she kissed him like she had wanted to when she was 15, and 16, and every year since then.
“When are you moving to Ystad?” he asked her as he opened his eyes and looked at her.
“Next week, are you going to show me around the place? And maybe help me find a place to live?”
Magnus smiled. “Oh, I have a place for you to live, for as long as you like. And if you don’t like it, we can move, find somewhere you do like…anywhere…”
Rebecka smiled at him and cupped his cheek. “I like that…” she said and he kissed her again.
“Min flicka,” he said with a smile as his fingers tangled in her hair, “äntligen.”
