“Jess,” Dipper said, catching her hand before she could pull away, “if there’s anything more you want out of me, anything you expect that I didn’t realize or have forgotten or anything I’m doing that bothers you that I’ve never noticed, you know you can tell me, right?”

Jessica didn’t realize she was gripping her Miraculous with her free hand until she felt the sharp point of the necklace digging into her palm, and she deliberately dropped her hand and smirked as she said, “We promised not to keep secrets like that from each other, so yeah, I’m going to tell you instead of fuming about it and expecting you to read my mind; if you think I’m mad at you for some reason, I swear I’m not.”

Dipper stared at her for a long moment before he said, very carefully, “Can you at least admit to having a secret you can’t tell me right now, that something more is going on in your life that you’re not ready to share with me, or are we both going to have to pretend you didn’t put a qualifier on that for this relationship to work?”

“Whatever magic you claim to possess,” came Jessica’s voice, its usual tease and warmth replaced with icy sharpness, “I can guarantee you it’s not the same as this, and if you attempt to take what is not given, you’ll endanger us all.”

Dipper’s hand froze over the latch of the ornate box—this was, after all, the first time Jessica had admitted to possessing any sort of magic, for all that he’d suspected as much and had demonstrated his own in an attempt to coax that admission out of her—but he couldn’t bring himself to turn back to look at her as he asked, “Are you guarding Pandora’s Box?”

“I might as well be,” she shot back, “since if you open that, we’ll lose everything we’ve built together.”

Dipper might have been an infamous paranormal investigator unafraid of crossing borders in search of answers, but Lila knew he’d found more questions than answers since getting tangled up with her, and a part of her loved seeing how deeply she could pull him into her world without his realising it.

She also knew he’d blanched because of the blasé way she’d sliced open her palm—magical artifacts which demanded blood as a sacrifice were generally more accepting of the offer if the wounds were not ones which healed easily—and not because she was feeding her blood to the knife so that it would allow her to carry it without falling victim to its curse.

“Is there not an easier way to do that?” Dipper asked, sounding like he very much thought there was, but Lila only laughed in response because the easy way to do it would have been to turn the knife on him instead—and she wasn’t going to do that while they were having so much fun with their little games.

“I thought I loved you,” admitted Dipper, even though the words tore a ragged hole into his chest because Lila was just smiling at him as if this had been some twisted plan of hers and he’d been a pawn in it from the beginning.

“You loved the layers of mystery,” she corrected airily, looking down at him from the top of the steps at the Trocadéro as if she didn’t feel any of what he had, “and the competition, and digging through it all for the truth.” A familiar gleam entered her eye, and she added, “I loved our little competition, too, but I like winning more.”

“There’s more to this entire story than you ever wanted me to know, isn’t there?” challenged Dipper, but Jessica’s even gaze gave away nothing, so he took a step closer to the box and was rewarded by her hands curling into fists. If he wasn’t careful, one of those fists might come flying at his face—but as Mabel loved telling people, he was never actually as careful as he thought he was trying to be.

“You can be suspicious and we can be done,” Jess said coldly, “or you can trust me and we can see where we end up; your choice.”

“Jess,” breathed Dipper, and her heart jumped into her throat and beat out a panicked rhythm as she tried to make sense of the way he was looking at her, of how he knew to call her Jess when he should just call her Eagle like everyone else did when she was using her Miraculous, and it didn’t matter that he was smiling because this was wrong, this shouldn’t be happening, and— “I can’t believe it was you all along—especially after I complained to you about how poorly my investigation into the source of Eagle’s magic was going!”

Jessica knew she should deny it, should feign ignorance or say something to throw him off the scent, to make him think that he’d gotten something wrong, but even as she considered and discarded a multitude of possibilities, when she finally forced her mouth to open, the only thing to come out was a weak, “Surprise?”
