“What does this button do?”
"What's that?" YN asked her father.
Jensen groaned as he followed his daughter's pointed finger towards a sign, "A stop sign."
"And that?" she asked, pointing to a tree.
"A pine tree."
"And that?"
"A rose bush."
While Danneel was out with her friends, Jensen was babysitting his daughter decided to take her to the park for the day. After all, it was a beautiful and sunny spring day in Austin, which was very rare.
And being cooped up in the house with a 5-year-old who has ten times the energy he does didn't seem like a smart idea.
Once at the park, YN immediately ran to the playground to play with her friends. Jensen decided to walk around the paved path at the park, mainly to be able to keep an eye on his daughter but to also enjoy the fresh air.
What was supposed to be a peaceful walk ended up being a questionaire for Jensen and YN. It wasn't that Jensen didn't want to have the company of his daughter, but he could go without her asking question after question.
"Why is the sky blue?" another question from YN.
Jensen sighed as he closed his eyes, "Because the air scatters blue light from the Sun across the sky and down to our eyes."
"Why are you so tall?"
"Because I'm older."
"Why-"
"YN!" Jensen yelled, "For five minutes, can you not ask me some stupid question!? Jeez, kid, you're giving me a migraine," he groaned."
YN immediately shut her mouth and looked down at her feet. Her father had never yelled at her like that before. She slowed her step until she came to a stop and let go of Jensen's hand. Her head was still down as tears filled her eyes.
Jensen no longer felt his daughter's hand in his. He looked down and she wasn't next to him anymore either.
He turned around and saw her standing in the middle of the path. Her hands were at her sides and her hair covered her face.
He walked towards her cautiously, "YN? Are you okay?"
She didn't move or speak as Jensen bent down to her level. He moved her hair from her face and lifted her chin.
And he felt his heart break.
YN had tears pouring down her face as she sobbed. She was crying her eyes out, but trying her best to stay quiet.
Seeing his daughter cry was definitely one of the worst things in the world, right up there with any injury she has had or will ever have and any broken heart she'll get (as well as any boyfriend she brings home).
"YN, honey, what's wrong?" Jensen asked.
She shook her head, refusing to speak.
Jensen laid a hand on her cheek and wiped the tears from her face, "YN, why are you crying? Tell me."
Another head shake from YN let him know she wasn't going to tell him anything.
Suddenly, the realization hit him, "W-was it what I said?"
YN looked up and made eye contact with him. She didn't have to speak a word. Jensen knew the answer.
And he felt his heart break a second time.
Jensen felt tears spring up in his own eyes, "Honey, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have yelled at you. That wasn't the way I should've said it," he sighed, "Daddy has been really tired and stressed out lately with his new show. And being home for a while doesn't make the stress go away. I shouldn't have snapped at you or taken any of it out on you," he paused as he wiped his eyes, "But you know what does make the stress go away?"
Instead of speaking, YN blinked at him, curious of what the answer was.
"Getting to spend time with you. Every minute I spend with you makes everything worth it," he smiled at her, "Getting to see your pretty face, hearing your voice and laughter, watching you play and have fun, and seeing your beautiful smile makes me so happy."
YN couldn't help the smile that formed on her face, "Really?"
Jensen chuckled, "Really really."
Even though she was happy for a moment, YN's face fell once more as she quietly spoke to her father, "I'm sorry if I made you mad, Daddy."
"You didn't, sweetheart," Jensen kissed her cheek, "You can ask me any question you want. Never be afraid to ask me anything."
The smile returned to his daughter's face, "Okay, Daddy."
"Why don't we head back to the house?" Jensen suggested, "And if you want, we can stop at the ice cream stand in town."
YN gave him a questionable look, "What kind of ice cream?"
Jensen laughed, "Anything you want."
"Anything?"
"Anything."
"Even a banana split with-"
"Extra cherries and whipped cream? Yes."
YN giggled, "Then let's go!"
Jensen chuckled as he picked YN up and sat her on his shoulders. He held on to her hands as he walked through the playground and towards the car.
Once at the car, Jensen buckled her into her car seat, tickling her sides and making her laugh as he did so. He jogged around to the driver's side and climbed in the car.
"Daddy?" YN asked.
Jensen turned the key in the ignition, "Yes, YN?"
YN quietly spoke, "You said I can ask questions, right?"
"You can ask any question you want, sweetheart."
"Okay," YN then pointed to the switch on the car door, "What does this button do?"
Jensen chuckled, "It rolls down the window. Why do you ask?"
YN shrugged, "No reason."
Jensen smiled as he pushed all four buttons on the driver door to roll all the windows down, "Was it for this reason?"
YN smiled and nodded, "Yeah."
Jensen put the car in drive and pulled out of the parking lot. As he drove towards the ice cream stand in town, he turned on the radio in the car. He was a little shocked to hear The High Kings through the speakers.
But it was not as shocking as hearing his 5-year-old daughter singing the words to Will Ye Go Lassie, Go?
"And we'll all go together To pluck wild mountain thyme-"
"When did you learn this?" Jensen interrupted his daughter.
YN giggled, "You sing it all the time, Daddy."
Jensen smiled and chuckled to himself, "That's my girl."
