An old post from my drafts but I believe it is very relevant, please read until the end:
Imagine you write a novel. Itās a hit, people read it all the time! People want more, and youāre happy to write it!
You try to publish the novel. Those same people sayĀ āWoah, hey, what are you doing? You were already writing that anyway, why would you expect anyone to give you money for it?ā
Sound ridiculous? Thatās the reality of fanfic writers everywhere. We spill our hearts and souls into fics, and yes, they are fics we have CHOSEN to write, but that doesnāt mean we worked any less hard on them or that you enjoyed them any less, does it? Why do only the things we were asked to write constitute payment?
This is why I try to always become a patron when possible, even if itās only $1 a month. Fanfic writers work incredibly hard on theirĀ āHobby Projectsā and are nice enough to bring them to you for free--it only makes sense that when you can, you would support them for it. Iām not trying to call anyone out or say you have to support me, Iām only trying to point out that most fanfic writers already produce a TON of content for you free of charge, so it isnāt ridiculous to consider supporting them every now and then if you can. I promise you, any tiny bit of support, monetary or fanart or otherwise, will absolutely make their day!
And if you can't, then please leave a comment, drop an ask, or reblog for them so others can see. A little goes a long, long way with fanart and fanfiction.
And if youāre wondering why a fic you liked stopped updating...well, maybe they felt like nobody liked it, and got discouraged. Because at least for me, thatās what happens when I donāt receive any kind of response. It's part of the reason I take long, loooooong hiatuses or even leave the fandom. We appreciate each and every ask, reblog, tag, fanart, comment, and donation we receive!
You wouldnāt expect Orson Scott Card or George RR Martin to produce free content for you just because it was their idea and not yours, would you?
