WHERE DO ARSENAL GO? It’s coming towards the business end of the season, the title is wrapped up, but Arsenal sit in sixth. They’re stuck between a rock and a hard place, no qualification for Europe’s top trophy and no chance of winning any domestic silverware. Every football fan will know of the outcry for legendary manager, Arsene Wenger, to get the sack. The club has been on a downward trajectory since the sale of Thierry Henry, you could say. Losing star player upon star player, crashing out early in the Champions League and continuously bottling the league. But what do Arsenal do next. It’s obvious that the only way to salvage the season is to go all in with Europa League. With players like Aubameyang, Özil, Mkhitaryan, etc. I don’t see why not. Man United did it with a less talented squad last season. This would grant them automatic qualification for the Champions League next season. But with such a talented squad, you have to ask the question, why aren’t they competing for bigger things? All things point to Wenger. The players no longer play for him and he continues to try the same thing expecting different results. So would winning the Europa League be the best way for Wenger to depart Arsenal? I say yes. He’s never won European silverware before, falling short in a UEFA Cup (Europa League) and Champions League final. This could save his legacy and the club’s status among Europe’s elite. So, what happens if Wenger leaves? Who comes in and who leaves? Arsenal have players like Cech, Cazorla and Mertersacker (the latter retiring end of the season) that must go onto better things. Not for them but for the club, they’re past their peak and taking up space in the squad. Players like Elneny, Welbeck and Ospina shouldn’t be used as starting players, they aren’t at the quality of what Arsenal fans expect their club to have. They need to keep hold of Wilshere and Ramsey, they are British (which is a bonus for the quota) and they are instrumental leaders at the club. But the big question is, who replaces Wenger? Simple! It’s not Massimiliano Allegri, sorry Arsenal fans. It’s gotta be Carlo Ancelloti. He’s proven to be a success in every league he’s managed in, maybe he’s not the long term successor, but he’ll lay the foundation Arsene Wenger should’ve left for the next Arsenal manager. But I feel any coach would snatch at the opportunity to take charge of Arsenal. To rebuild a club in your own image, with a large budget and in the world’s greatest league, who wouldn’t?! It’s only a matter of time before Arsene Wenger leaves, whether it’s mutual or by force, his legacy won’t be celebrated now but maybe in a few years Arsenal fans will appreciate what he did for the club.
