Let's ramble about Cahir, shall we?
So here's Cahir as he is now:
And here's Cahir as he was before his redesign:
And here's our version of the Outsider:
Granted, ^ this look is the Emperor pretending to be the Outsider to gain Cahir's trust but bear with me here, okay? The Emperor pulled this specific look straight from Cahir's brain because that's what the Outsider actually looks like for realsies. So far so good? Awesome.
[Fun fact: We based the in-game Outsider's appearance off of Jerome (an alter) who vaguely looks like that. Jerome is our Headspace's Outsider.]
Now for some "headcanons"!
For starters, his subclass is assassin and he will be multiclassing into fighter later on.
You can't really see it because of Cahir's dark as fuck skin tone but he has scars on his left cheek and across his throat. He got those scars in a fight against some Lolth-sworn drow. He nearly died that time, his throat having been slit and all, but that's when the Outsider marked him and granted him his powers, thus saving him from death.
Cahir himself did his best to follow Eilistraee but found it difficult to do so given the fact he was a Bhaalspawn. He tried to find solace in Eilistraee's teachings but blood and carnage followed him everywhere he went. Eventually he just decided that if he can't avoid conflict he will simply make each murder count.... And the Outsider watched with great interest as Cahir tried to honor Eilistraee with his atrocities.
You all know the canon, you know that Durge was adopted and that they killed their adoptive family before Sceleritas Fel took them in. So in Cahir's case I'm thinking his adoptive family were other Seldarine drow who taught him Eilistraee's ways and he loved them and they were happy despite the fact these people had Lucius-level bullshit happening in their house on the daily until Cahir inevitably killed them, right? And he's devastated. He's laughing but he's also crying and what will Eilistraee think of him now? Following Sceleritals Fel only felt natural to him because who else would agree to look after a monster?
Cahir was a violent child. Violent. He hurt other children, he tortured small animals, his temper tantrums were explosive, he destroyed everything in his path when he was frustrated, and it took hours to soothe him. His parents loved him though, they genuinely did love him. He was an only child and didn't have any friends so his parents took to trying to expose him to art, to music, to reading, to dance. It worked, kind of. But what Cahir enjoyed the most was to fight. His father taught him knife fighting at a fairly early age and Cahir perfected it into an artform of its own right.
Cahir tried to deny his violent urges, at first. He tried to pretend they aren't there or use opposite action to cope with them. When it only made him feel worse he took to directing his urges towards righteous causes, like targeting those who, in his mind (or by society's standards) deserved to be hurt. Rapists, abusers, backstabbers, and the like. But.... With time, and with Bhaal's influence strengthening, Cahir stopped caring who it was he's hurting. All he cared about was bathing in the blood of his victims and fucking their corpses. Memories of Eilistraee became distant echoes, and he stopped pursuing music and art as a way to distract himself from his urges. All he saw was red.
At this point in time we don't know much about the Bhaalists, what it means to be Bhaal's Chosen, Durge's relationship with Gortash or what happens canonically if Durge chooses to either reject or embrace Bhaal but the way we see Cahir, he is a deeply troubled man who experiences horrible intrusive thoughts that often turn into compulsions which those closest to him ENCOURAGE. He DESPERATELY wants to be a good man, someone people would LIKE, yet he keeps being told that he is evil incarnate and that his purpose on Earth is to spread said evil far and wide, that it's okay to give into his urges on one hand but that it also makes him irredeemable on the other. Some days he'd much rather kill himself.
He's so.... starved. Touch starved, affection deprived, he'd basically cry if you hugged him. He's grown so used to violence and to maintaining a safe distance from anyone he might accidentally hurt without thinking that any show of affection towards him is treated with a hefty amount of wariness and the hunger of a malnourished dog. WHY are you being nice to him, WHAT do you want, and most importantly.... Can you go on forever?
When it comes to sex, Cahir is pretty much a virgin if you don't count the corpses. A willing, consenting, LIVING partner? It never happened, not before Raphael. Sex is the ultimate show of trust, the ultimate show of vulnerability, of course Cahir never partook, nobody ever taught him that it can be safe and enjoyable. And you KNOW Raphael took his time with him.
Cahir's adoptive mother was a trans woman named Mizzrym as I apparently found out uhhhh just about right now. Here's a picture of her:
Mizzrym was a Seldarine drow ranger who was ostracized by the other drow because drow are fucking sexist so of course she loved her problem child who appeared seemingly out of nowhere and was also quite hated by most people. ❤️ She was the hireling summoned by Withers to aid Cahir in his journey (because fuck what the canon says about hirelings) even though Cahir has no fucking idea who she is to him because Amnesia™.
Yes, Cahir was genuinely attracted to Raphael because of his theatrics at first. The way Raphael carried himself and recited various poems and ballads would remind Cahir of his own age-old interest in song and dance, making Raphael feel.... familiar. Almost warm.
Cahir killed Gale. Yep. Gnawed his hand clean off.
To wrap up this already very long post I think I'll say that HOW Cahir's relationship with Raphael developed is still a mystery to me. In the old version Cahir was a messenger from the Void who was sent to the Hells by the Outsider to negotiate terms and conditions with Raphael and that's where things started, but now? Cahir is a Void-touched Bhaalspawn, AKA a mortal, who likely spent most of his time in Bhaal's temple if we adhere to canon. But if you know us you know we love ignoring canon often so we'll see where things lead us as time goes on I guess.
