Ossuaire de Douaumont
Looking like the hilt of a sword that has been plunged into the ground all the way up to the guard, the Douaumont Ossuary was inaugurated in 1932 to memorialize the 230,000 soldiers killed during the Battle of Verdun. The skeletal remains of at least 130,000 men from both France and Germany fill the lower alcoves of the Ossuary. On the grounds before the memorial lies the largest French military cemetery with the graves of 16,142 soldiers.
Within the Ossuary there are 18 alcoves with each containing a pair of tombs. Above each tomb is an inscription detailing the area of the battlefield where the bodies held within were recovered.
A two-ton bell sits at the top of the Ossuary and I was fortunate enough to be at the memorial when the bell was rung. See the video below.
On September 22 1984 French President Francois Mitterrand and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl stood before the Douaumont Ossuary with hands clasped in friendship. The image of Mitterrand, injured at Verdun during the Second World War, and Kohl, whose father fought in the First World War, together as their national anthems were played showed another example that the two historical enemies had put conflict behind them.
