And what better place to make your mark than London's iconic Chinatown! Beef Sukiyaki – thinly sliced beef and veg that you cook in a soy broth, £19.50 We were really looking forward to this, not least for the opportunity of cooking that large plate of beef slithers in a hot and bubbly broth. And so it was that around five minutes after having lit the apparent block of methanol fuel neath the hot pot (the obvious indication being when the broth begins to seep through and bubble around the edges), that we were ready to indulge ourselves. Now, given how thinly sliced the strips of beef are, all you’ll need is between 10-15 seconds, i.e. when the red hue transforms into a pale pink colour, before you’re ready to devour. The broth itself, however, did split the crowd. We were all agreed that it did err on the sweet side. But, while one Lion thought this to be negligible, the other two didn’t. Nonetheless, there’s no denying the experience, particularly when enjoying the beef with the condiments: shiitake and shimeji mushrooms, cabbage, carrots and soft tofu.
