Summary: Based in an alternate timeline within the Movie Weapons(2025), Mitchell Beckett is a retired musical artist and a father of three children. One night he stays up a little late in his studio to find that at exactly 2:17am his two sons disappeared.
1:58 AM
A mix of music poured from the soundboard as Mitch continued to mess with the controls. He listened to the recording for the sixth time straight. For some reason he just wasn't happy with it.
Fuck it, he was going to record a new track over it. There was just something about it that didn't sound right. The man picked himself up from his chair and pinched the bridge of his nose. He was tired, he really should have been in bed already. It wasn't fair to make sure Tulip was the one to get up with the kids in the morning. One more try and he was going to bed.
Mitchell removed the headphones from his head. He ran a hand over his head, messing with the bleached blonde hair and brown roots atop his head. He left the headphones on the table but continued to alter the soundboard and use his computer to isolate the recording track he'd been playing along with.
He stepped away from the table and towards his recording set up not too far away. Mitch took a seat and took the guitar into his hand he propped it on his thigh and made sure the cords were still plugged in correctly. He plucked the guitar pick from between the strings and eyed his capo strangely. He grabbed his headphones off the stand and put them over his head, one side covered his ear and the other sat covering his hair behind his ear rather than over it. He wanted to be able to hear everything on both sides
2:14 AM
Mitch finished recording a few minutes ago. He was just experimenting with different techniques at this point. He imagined when he caught up with Dennis and Delilah that weekend they'd have their own ideas and inputs.
Content and confident in his last recording, Mitch switched gears back to the desk that housed his recording equipment. He had been serious when he promised himself one last try and then he was going to bed, he didn't even sit back to down. Instead he switched over to the other pair of headphones and isolated the track he'd just recorded and gave it a listen over. He set them securely over his ears.
It sounded pretty alright.
The computer mouse clicked over as he went to add the new track to mix along with the others. He dragged the clip where he needed and gave the full song track a listen. The track stopped and Mitch felt a sense of pride swell in his chest. Finally he had gotten this right.
2:17 AM
If Mitch would have heard it instantly if he hadn't been using his studio equipment. The quality and noise cancellation still worked well even when there wasn't any sound actually going through them.
It was the strangest thing, Mitch wasn't sure what grabbed his attention, he could barely hear the footsteps that raced down his stairs. A few muted thumps and suddenly Mitch was raising a suspicious brow. Was Freddie trying to sneak into the cabinets again?
He ripped the headphones off his head, his gaze now fixated on the ceiling above him. It sounded like one of the kids was up, he heard their footsteps fully now and they were fast. Now that struck the fear of God into him.
Mitchell immediately set to the stairs. He took them two at a time, something in his gut told him to hurry up and see what was going on. There was nothing specifically he could blame his anxiety on. But something kicked his parental instincts into high gear.
His hand wrapped around the door handle and threw it open. Multicolor eyes looked around in a panic, he swallowed thickly and he heard a harsh slam followed by the house alarm loudly warning that the front door had been opened.
His blood ran cold.
He was at the door in seconds. Both hands wrapped around each side of the door frame as he looked outside into the dead of night. His front lawn was still littered with toys Freddie and Elijah had left out overnight, the same ones he'd yelled at them to clean up while Tulip made dinner last night. That fucking baseball bat was going to start rusting soon.
He stared out into the street, he could just see movement in the bushes across the street. He moved anyway. He was running across his yard, trying to see what the hell was going on, who that was and what the fuck was going on. He needed to know what that was. If someone just broke in, if someone just tried to rob them, or even worse... Mitch needed to know now. His family needed to be safe in their own goddamn house. He settled down in the middle of fucking nowhere to get away from this shit. He couldn't see anything out there, nothing that would calm his nerves.
But that was it, he couldn't see anything. At least until he did.
His neighbor, his wife's best friend, Jade, she was running out of her house too and she was yelling. Mitch couldn't make out what she was saying as she collapsed to her knees in the street. She was sobbing.
Mitchell didn't even think twice, well, technically he did. He gave one last suspicious glance at the bushes and he rushed to the other side of the street.
His hands grabbed her shoulders, the only light that let him see her tears was the front porch lights from the Graff house. Mitchell tried to get the woman to her feet. He let her ground herself against him. As he met her eyes, he couldn't begin to explain the emotion and panic behind them.
"Jade! Jade what happened?" He asked her, his own eyes frantic as he looked over her face. Mitch helped Jade stand, she stumbled slightly but he tried to keep her steady.
As soon as Jade was on her feet her persistence and concern overpowered every other thought in her head. "They shouldn't have-" She immediately went back to chasing down the direction Mitch had been staring down seconds ago. "They shouldn't have gone" she repeated.
"What the hell are you-" Mitch asked her following hot on her tail. "Jade what the fuck happened!" he yelled at her loudly. He took longer strides and made it alongside her.
Mitchell was a man who never raised his voice often. Okay maybe he'd yell a little too loud at Elijah and Freddie's baseball games. Or maybe he'd get a little too drunk at the bar sometimes loudly declare that "some people just can't say excuse me?" before having to be dragged out. And maybe he got a little too invested in the rare chance he actually watched a game on cable with some of the other dads. But he wasn't an angry guy, far from it. He didn't yell at women either and he wasn't yelling at Jade out of anger or any misplaced emotion. He was trying to snap her out of whatever daze she was in. He was worried and he was panicked.
"The kids!" She yelled back at him, despite the small distance between them. They were shoulder to shoulder and Jade nearly blew out his eardrum. "They're gone! They just-" Jade looked forward still, in the direction they'd gone.
A harsh slam of a door turned both their heads. The front door of the Graff house slammed shut and Archer was stomping down those front steps and marching across the yard.
"Honey and Blue. They just took off" Jade said, her bright green eyes still full of tears. "It wasn't just them it looked like they were with others too" she told him while her eyes fixed back on her husband.
Mitch felt his entire body go cold.
"I heard-" he shook his head and let out an airy laugh. There was no way. There was actually no fucking way this was happening. "I heard footsteps and I- I mean this is crazy right?" He asked shaking his head, he was pacing now on the side walk. His baggy shirt rippling as he raised his hands behind his head and let his fingers link together. "I heard the door open and the alarm go off, you don't think-" his terrified smile finally dropped and he felt like he was going to be sick.
Jades brow was furrowed and she patted down her pockets. She was looking for her phone. "Is Lorraine?" She muttered to herself. "Someone call Ali too, they couldn't have gotten far, right?" She asked looking between Archer and Mitch quickly.
Mitchell turned to look back at his house. Every light was off, the entire house was asleep. And then a single light flickered on and illuminated the curtains that blocked the window. The kids bathroom. He narrowed his eyes and didn't listen as Jade and Archer spoke to eachother. He took a step off the sidewalk and onto the street.
"I need to see if they're there" he said swallowing. "I gotta- I gotta get Tulip" he nodded to himself already walking backwards across the street and towards his house.
"Mitchell, wait!" Archer called after him.
Jade was still looking for her phone, desperate to call and warn her friends. She hadn't even called the police yet. Mitch took it upon himself to go fishing through his pockets to pull out his cellular. He was already dialing the cops and running back to them. He shoved his phone into Jades hand.
"Passwords Tulips birthday!" Mitch told her before immediately turning his back to her. His voice had stern and loud, but it wasn't angry. He was halfway across the street and he didn't require that decibel of volume.
Mitch had left the front door wide open. The security system flashed silently that the alarm has been tripped and he failed to disarm it in time. That was fine by him. But part of him still held out hope that his babies were still all tucked up in bed right where he left them.
Mitch tried to keep it together, he was on high alert and he couldn't see anything. He didn't even really look on the first floor. The kitchen was dark and empty, the play room was abandoned, the family room was desolate, and the dinning room still had each of their book bags on the table. How many times was he gonna have to tell them to stop doing that? They knew it drove their mother mental but-
A sound from upstairs grabbed Mitchell's attention like he was a K-9 unit. He turned almost unconsciously and immediately bolted for the stairs. The hallway was dark, and only a single light remained on. It slipped through where the door was cracked open.
The kids bathroom.
Mitch didn't think twice before barging in. There, kneeled half over on the linoleum was Mary. Her garbage pail was cradled in her arms, the basket lined with old plastic shopping backs and now stomach acid. It seems her strep throat hadn't seemed to pass yet.
Mitch didn't care. He didn't care one bit. A relief unlike any other filled him. His daughter coughed into the basket and looked up at him tiredly. "I didn't make it to the basket at first dad-" she coughed and spit into the basket. The young girl grimaced and raised her head to apologize to her father.
However Mary didn't get the chance before she was being scooped up into his arms. "It's okay Mare-bear." He told her. Mitch held her in his arms and brought her close the same way he used to when she was a toddler, the same way he refused to let go off and insisted he still carried her now. One of his hands held the back of her head and soothed over her hair. "It's okay baby, don't you worry, okay?" he repeated relieved. "Daddy's got you and you're all fine now okay?"
Mitch felt as though he could cry. He had never been more relieved in his life. They were fine, his kids were safe and home and in bed.
"Let's get you in some clean clothes, okay Mare?" He offered. "Then we can get some water and brush our teeth hm?" He told her smiling. "Now just let me check on your brothers okay?"
"I can go change" Mary suggested, she let herself stay limp and tired in her father's arms. She was beyond tired, her fever had come and gone so many times and she spent all day sleeping while she'd been home from school. She was happy to sleep through the night again too.
Mitch let her down outside her bedroom door. He stayed down on one of his knees and kept his arms open wide. Silently Mary smiled tiredly and hugged him. She went back into her room and Mitch stood up feeling slightly better.
His relief didn't last long. Both Elijah and Freddy's doors had all been left slightly ajar, which wasn't uncommon. Freddie had been getting into watching scary movies and videos without either Mitch or Tulips permission as of late. He'd claim that he was mature enough to handle it at the ripe age of ten. Mitch had to dig out a nightlight from the attic a few weeks ago. Freddie's been sleeping with the door open for weeks now and had been insisting that he wasn't scared. As a matter of fact Mitchell recalled Freddie claiming that Elijah was actually the one who was scared and that he kept the door open incase Elijah needed him.
Mitch pushed the door open and peaked his head inside. The door to Freddie's bedroom creaked open and truth be told Mitch felt his heart drop. The bed was empty. The boys comforter was thrown halfway over the bed and his sheets were a tangled mess.
He held onto delusion a minute longer. Sometimes Freddie would sleep over on the beanbag chair in Elijah's room when he was really scared, that was if he was too embarrassed to climb into bed with Tulip and himself after they'd specifically told him no to watching those creepy whatever videos on YouTube or those games about animatronic whatever's.
But when Mitchell got to Elijah's door and he found the bed empty in the exact same manner, he took a step back. He let out a huff of air, not a laugh, not a pant, he just looked on in shock. Mitch walked into the room and moved the sheets around frantically.
"Elijah. Elijah this isn't funny, get out here." He declared aloud. The man looked down and checked under the bed. His next step was the closet. "Lijah, come out, I mean it-" Mitch said looking the closet and moving the hangers around. He expected his son to miraculously appear.
Within seconds he ran back to Freddie's room, repeating the same motions.
"Boys this isn't funny. Come on out now!" He said gripping onto the footboard of the twin bed frame. His chest felt tight and he choked up. He couldn't breathe, where the fuck were his boys?
It didn't take long for Mary to show back up in the doorframe sporting new matching purple pajamas. Mitch looked at the crown design on it and to her sad little face. He took a deep breath. He needed to keep it cool in front of Mary, he couldn't scare her.
"Daddy what's going on?" Mary asked wiping at her eyes.
Mitch let go of the bed frame and walked out of the bedroom quickly. "N-nothing jellybean, just why don't you go brush your teeth and I'm gonna go grab Mommy" he told her trying to force a smile despite the way his heart hammered in his chest.
He booked it into the master bedroom of the house. The lights were on in an instant and Tulip groaned, still half asleep.
"Tulip, wake up," he called before he'd even made it to the bedside. Mitch grabbed ahold of her arm and shook her slightly. "Hon, wake up-"
"What is it?" Tulip grumbled tiredly sitting up.
"Freddie and Elijah. They're gone" he told her frantically. Mitch was positive he could have been shaking he was so scared. His heart sounded in his ears louder than the world around him. "Tulip they're fucking gone." He told her.
Tulip would have questioned him more if he was calmer. However she knew her husband and she knew him well. Mitch looked absolutely stricken, he was pale and he looked clammy and slightly sweaty. His eyes shown with a panic unlike anything she'd ever seen from him.
Her soul might as well have left her body. Tulip ran on auto pilot. Throwing on the first pair of shoes she could stumble upon and moving towards their bedrooms. She threw the doors open to look for herself. It took only seconds for the tears to well in her eyes and for her hands to tremble.
"Check the playroom" she told him with a quivering lip. "Maybe they're just playing or-"
"Tulip I checked the whole house." He told her keeping his eyes on her as best as he could. Mitchell circled around to find Mary still safe and in the bathroom. "They're not here! Jade already called the cops" he told her while opening the bathroom door to watch as Mary threw out her small paper cup that had held her mouthwash.
He stood at the door and moved into the bathroom as Tulip stood there hugging herself and wiping away tears as soon as they showed themselves. She didn't want Mary to see, clearly Mary didn't understand what was going on yet. Mitch tied off the bag Mary had thrown up in inside her garbage pail and replaced it with a new one.
"But your studio-" Tulip insisted. "They- they play hide and seek in there all the time" she suggested. "They have to be here somewhere." She persisted as her chest tightened and she felt herself begin to wheeze as she choked up.
Mitch held the empty bucket back out to Mary for her to hold and he picked her up again. He brought their daughter to stand with them before the three doors of the children's bedrooms. Using his free hand he pulled Tulip into his side as she cried.
"Jade and Archer went over to check on Lorraine and Shane" he told her warningly. Mitch anticipated the way she'd react to his words. His grip on her tightened and he held her closer, letting her head fall into his neck and chest.
He heard a sniffle and felt her hands on him, trying to push him away slightly so she could look up at him. Mitch just held her close, trying to ground her and keep her stable. He could barely keep himself in check for the moment, but he knew that he needed to try and keep his family together and stable right now.
Mitchell stood with Mary in one arm and Tulip in the other, all that was left of his world was within his arms. His boys were missing and he didn't have the first clue what do about it right now, as soon as he went downstairs and got his wife her inhaler, he was planning on leaving too. He'd be within his car and circling the streets within minutes if he was lucky.
Or perhaps they'd go together, the three of them, over to Lorraine and Shane's place to see what was happening. Mitch didn't want to let his wife or his daughter out of his sight. He placed a kiss on top of Mary's head and turned to press his lips to the top of Tulips, he kept them placed there.
He had to try and hold back his own tears for the mean time. The ones he couldn't keep in, he'd try his best to hide.
Summary: Tulip finally moves out. Mitchell, ever hopeful to finally snag his spot as her boyfriend is eager to help out. Even if it means hanging out with her family and friends while he's forced to actually endure the physical labor.
Bodies entered the house. That was the only way Curtis Caulfield could describe it. One after the next there was another one.
Curtis and his wife had been having considerable trouble with their eldest daughter lately. Granted, the relationship he held with his daughter hadn't been the same since she turned thirteen.
Despite being in her twenties and finically independent for anything and everything besides the roof over her head, they acted as though she was a child. It took one more comment out of Curtis' mouth for Tulip to rearrange her funding to finally move out. Tulip finally saved up enough and decided she was leaving.
And so, bodies. There were so many men Curtis was speechless. Each one of them was just as shady as the next, his blood boiled. Where the hell did his daughter find these people? There were so many odd hair colors, such odd clothing, the smell of pot and alcohol wafted through the doorway. He didn't have the words for how he felt, these men were men. Most of them looked older than his daughter by a decent few years. He grimaced watching them parade around his parlor room.
Tulip had been standing at the door holding it open as her friends all came inside. She wore a genuine smile as she looked them over. Mitch, Stevo, Anakin, Mike, and Warren filed into the house.
Janice took notice of the one boy who looked out of place amongst the rest of them. A nice dress shirt buttoned up to the top and glasses, she let out a sigh. What was Tulip putting this sweet young boy through?
"I'm serious thanks for coming to help." Tulip said to the group of guys as they stopped to stand and crowd her. Funny enough she didn't mind.
"Ah cmon now." Mitch's voice carried. He was the furthest away from her and the furthest into the house. "It's no biggie and you know it." He chuckled and walked further into the house towards the stairs.
Mitchell could see Curtis and Janice staring down at them from the banister. He looked up and gave a small wave and a smile, his muscle tee riding up slightly.
Stevos voice cut in from behind Mitch. His hands placed on the man's shoulders as they greeted her parents. "Hey Mr and Mrs Caulfield!" He yelled up with a large grin. "How are you guys doin'?" He asked.
Curt grimaced and looked down. "Hello Steven." The man said reluctantly.
Tulip pat Warren on the back as she shut the door to the house. She looked back in over her friends, when she saw Stevo and Mitch with their backs towards her she frowned. Her eyes followed upwards and she saw her parents disapproving faces looking down at them. She rolled her eyes. Tulip already knew this was going to be a long afternoon.
Anakin had already moved towards the stairs to get this show on the road. His glasses were folded and hanging from the collar of his tee shirt.
"Let's get this started, huh" Mike called from the group. He clapped a hand over Stevos back, telling him to hurry up. Mike followed Anakin up the stairs. This was awkward, it was Mikes first time actually inside her house. He'd seen the outside of it dozens of time but he'd never actually entered the house.
Anakin took the steps two at a time, he ascended them quickly, smiling politely at his friend's parents. "Nice to meet you guys." He said with a timid smile. "I'm Anakin." He introduced.
Mike had come up behind him, standing a few inches taller than Ani as he held out his hand to the man of the house. He looked down at Curt with a smile. Mike was anything if not polite.
Curtis look at the man. Appearance wise he seemed to be the most put together of the group of delinquents and vandals his daughter brought into the house. Personally Curtis thought Mike looked like an overgrown nerd from high school. Thick glasses and pastel button ups didn't help the image in the slightest. Curt just accepted it at this point, he reached out and shook the man's hand.
"Hi, it's nice to meet you Mr Caulfield. My names Michael but you can call me Mike" hummed out happily. He took the man's hand in his own firmly and shook it before turning to the women. "And it's nice to finally meet you too Mrs Caulfield" Mike said opening his arms to greet the woman in a hug. It was a gesture she hesitantly accepted.
Anakin's voice boomed from the top of the stairs. "T, I'm gonna get to gettin' started!" He yelled as he walked down to the open space that led to the rooms. He was standing before Tulips bedroom door in seconds, it was something that wasn't lost on Curtis.
Ani and Mike entered the room while the others still made their way up the stairs and up into the house.
Warren awkwardly made his way past her parents. Honest to god he hadn't actually seen both of the Caulfields since he was in fifth grade and they came to see the school chorus concert. He'd never actually been inside their house while they were home before. It was weird.
Janice perked up upon seeing Warren come up the stairs. She hadn't recognized him up until he was right before her. He was that LeBeau boy that used to live in town! Janice recalled how she used to be friendly with his mother years ago.
"Good to see you guys" Warren said sheepishly. This was so fucking weird.
"Good to see you, William." Curtis said before receiving a small swat from his wife on his arm. He turned to look at her.
"Warren." The man corrected with a tightlipped smile. "My names Warren." He said licking over his teeth. He stood rigid just looking at them uncomfortably.
Janice looked at her husband offended. "This is Remys son" she told him. "You remember them." she told him.
Warren had to stand there and watched as the man actively remembered who he was. God he wanted to kill himself.
"Oh that's right." Curtis mumbled as Warren slinked off towards his daughter's bedroom down the hall.
His eyes turned to Stevo coming up the stairs. He let out a sigh. As soon as the blue haired punk made it to the top of the stairs he greeted them with open arms.
Stevo leaned down to wrap his arms around each of the girls parents. "Good to see ya! Good to see ya!" He cheered, his hands rubbed the backs of each of them. The stench of liquor radiated off of his clothes and his breath. He pulled back giggling, the man was just as tipsy as he was every day.
Curtis grunted slightly at the surprise gesture and waited till the boy pulled off of him and marched down the hall to be with the others. When was this going to end?
Lastly, Tulip followed behind Mitchell. The man smelled faintly of the joint he'd smoked earlier that morning, he smelled even stronger of the second one he'd smoked on the car ride to the house. The cologne he wore to try and mask it had mixed in with the scent he was trying to cover initially.
Mitchell felt like his heart was in his throat. He was meeting the parents, in the back of his mind this was such a daunting task. This could ruin everything for him. Then again, it wasn't like Tulip had the best relationship with her parents at the moment anyway. It was technically the entire reason he was even in their house to begin with. He'd never even been here before.
He could feel himself smiling, he'd never felt this anxious or shy in his life. Mitch was usually pretty outgoing, he was loud and he was confident. But looking at the disapproving faces of the two people atop those steps sent a cold shiver down his spine.
"Hey" Mitch said taking his first step off the stairs as he stood on even ground. Unlike just about everyone else he didn't tower over them. Mitchell stood at eye level with Curtis. "Nice to meet you guys." He said holding out his hand and swallowing the spit that had gathered in his mouth. Despite being riddled with nerves, he was playing it off pretty well.
Curtis shook the man's hand tightly, Mitch tried to keep his grip firm. The men locked eyes and shared a silent interaction. Tulip watched on with a raised brow but elected to ignore it. Mitch was terrified. Curtis was a terrifying man after all. A veteran with conviction, a father in a struggling marriage, and a man. Curtis Caulfield could kill Mitch with his bare hands if he really wanted to, and if he ever found out what Mitch thought of the man's daughter, he'd be six feet under by sundown.
"You guys have a really nice house." Mitch complimented as Curtis finally dropped his palm. He kept his eyes on the accusatory stares the parents sent him. Jesus Christ, no wonder Tulip had issues, these people looked psycho. "My names Mitchell, but you can call me Mitch if you'd like" he said trying to throw a smile their way to ease the tension.
Janice was quiet. She gave the appearance of a dutiful mother but Mitch knew the truth. Rather he knew what Tulip had told him. As much as he had heard about their issues, they seemed like a decent pair. Curtis, son of a Brooklyn boy who moved up north. Janice, daughter of Chinese immigrants who settled down in the suburbs. When they stood side by side they looked to be quite the pair. They even had matching stares.
Janice gave a polite smile in return. Curtis did not.
As a matter of fact Curtis just nodded before he spoke. "Right." He had said looking the red haired man over before licking over his lips and sighing dramatically. He turned to look at his daughter. "Tulip, I'm going to be in my study just-" he let out another huff. "If they're bringing that stuff out, don't scratch the floors." He warned her.
Tulip held back an eye roll and a handful of swears. She reached out to grab Mitch's wrist by his bracelets. "Sure, fine. Just let me know when Billy and Lance get here." She said aloud before dragging Mitch back towards the noise and ruckus inside her bedroom.
The scene inside her bedroom was nothing short of comical.
Warren and Anakin were stacking boxes by the door, Mike was dismantling a desk, and Stevo and Mitch were taking apart her entire bed frame. Her record player was on the floor in the corner and the music was blasting, the milk crate full of records remained along with it.
After every single record ended, the arguments started up again. Laughs were had loudly and items that weren't boxed were thrown. Tulip kept boxing up the last of it.
Warren loaded up some of the boxes into his own car while Anakin did the same, hoping that they could clear up some space. Mike had agreed to take pieces of the desk he'd dismantled into his car and a few other boxes. Stevo took what Mike couldn't fit. Since Mitch had so kindly agreed to drive the rented U-Haul truck , he along with the others had been loading that up with furniture for the last hour. Lance and Billy had finally shown up with just enough time to help load up the truck.
Billy was the only one of the pair that actually helped Mitch in any way. Lance wasn't exactly the strongest when it came down to all the heavy lifting. Naturally Tulip had ended up putting him to work in other ways.
Once Mitch finally came back inside he hadn't found Tulip inside her room. He'd only found Lance carefully boxing up her record collection. Mitch would pace through the house looking for her and calling out her name. Tulip had been downstairs, further back into the house and buried in the kitchen. Not that Mitch could find her.
Mitchell had made his way down the stairs, his necklaces jingling and hair moving to stick to his sweaty forehead. His hair dye was beginning to transfer and stain the skin. He'd continued to walk around the house. His hands clenched and his brows furrowed in confusion. Where the hell was this chick? As he walked he moved his hands to remove his gloves. They'd finally be coming off after the work was done, at least for the meantime. Truth be told he wanted to save his palms from the abuse of the physical labor. He'd been pulling them off his hands and shoving them in his back pocket as he called once again into the house.
"Hey flowers, you in here?" Mitch asked calmly. His voice airy and calm despite having been looking for her for the last few minutes. He poked his head around the house and followed the noises in the distance. He finally saw her before she even answered him.
Tulip stood in the kitchen filling up multiple water cups from a pitcher. Her head perked up and she smiled faintly seeing him.
"Hey!" she greeted. "Doin' alright?" the girl picked up one of the cups and went to meet him by the spacious entrance to the kitchen. She didn't let go of the cup as she held it out to him, she angled it so he didn't have to move to reach the straw. "Dying out there yet?" She asked with a small laugh.
He looked at her, skeptical and yet intrigued by her actions. That was nice, like really nice. Especially for her. His eyes met hers and he wrapped his lips around the straw. He took her gift graciously, sucking down the cold liquid before she set the cup down on the counter.
Mitchell came in beside her as she moved. He let his hand slide around her waist to pull her closer. He watched as she turned to look at him, still smiling with that adorable blush spread over her cheeks. God, he could look at her forever.
Mitch could feel it, he could see it in the distance. He had been circling closer to the boyfriend title after Tulips last romantic fiasco. He was still thanking his lucky stars that that Crosshair guy was a fucking idiot. The finish line was insight.
"You seem like you're enjoying yourself" he told her with a grin. "Having fun just standing and watching?" Mitch asked her, a knowing smile on his lips.
Less than half an hour ago Tulip had been standing, watching, and ogling as Mitchell was taking apart her bed frame and hauling it out piece by piece. Mitch's cheeks had been reddened before and were slightly still now after having since rearranged the furniture in the van. Despite the open windows and cool breeze, the early summer heat and the exertion was still getting to him. There was a slight sweat across his brow. His hair was still sticking to his forehead, Tulip raised a finger to brush it aside.
"Only a little bit." She confessed leaning in closer to him. Her head slowly fell to his shoulder, her cheek was smushed against his skin and the fabric of his cut up tee shirt as she still tried to look up at him.
Mitch turned and glanced down. He was smiling at her, looking unimpressed but he managed to make up for it with the love behind his eyes. Any idiot that wasn't blind could see just how enamored he was.
"I'm still not convinced that this definitely wasn't your master plan." He hummed. "I mean you somehow managed to convince Warren to help you out." He whistled and smiled down to her. His cheeks were starting to hurt. "I'd love to know how you pulled that off."
Tulip was enjoying the proximity. She was enjoying his hands on her and the closeness. "What I can say?" She said. Her words were garbled from her face being pushed into his shoulder. Tulip picked up her head. "My charismatic charm bewitched all my friends to help me." She joked with him sarcastically. She watched him throw his head back slightly in a short laugh.
She could get used to this. This was comfortable.
Mitch let his other hand wrap behind her, still standing there with their waists flush and a few inches separating their chests. His hands were planted firmly and holding her by her waist. Tulip leaned back to put a little distance between their faces so she could continue to admire him in full. She was growing more comfortable with the realization of that was exactly what she was doing, she was admiring him. She was beginning to be okay with that.
They stood closely, Mitch watched over her face and her smile. He looked at how happy she seemed right then and there in his arms. He shifted closer to her now, leaning in.
Mitchell's voice came out a little more airy. "Oh you're bewitching alright" he said quietly repeating her odd choice of words to her. He didn't disagree with her though. Not in the slightest. His eyes kept moving between her eyes and her lips once again before his fingers adjusted themselves along her waist.
Tulip loved looking at his eyes. She had so many friends with so many quirks, it was funny how many of them had such fun multicolored eyes. It was almost starting to make her jealous. Mitch's eyes crinkled, blue, green, and grey eyes fell to close ever so slightly. Tulip was enjoying just how bold he was acting today. Finally, she thought to herself. Her fingers twitched at her sides until she decided to raise them to rest on the man's chest. They rested comfortably there right over the fabric. She could feel him beneath her, solid, firm and real. Her eyes locked onto his.
His face was impossibly close. Tulip could feel the warmth of him through his clothes and through her fingertips. The closer he got the more certain she was that she was blushing. He was so close, leaning down to her slowly, closing the gap and breathing in her air. God, why did he keep dragging this out? Her body was alight.
Mitch mumbled quietly to her. His head was tilted slightly, as he leaned forward his lips were only inches from hers. His eyes would slip from hers and then down to her lips interchangeably. He was terrified of ruining this. Mitchell was petrified of becoming the next suitor shunned and rejected by her. He'd seen so many men try and fail at capturing her affection. He didn't want to be next.He was practically whispering to her, he was losing all self restraint at this point. "Tell me to stop." He asked of her. His hands held her waist tighter, trying to ground himself and get a hold of this himself. "If you don't want this" he muttered. "Tell me to stop, please" he was seconds away from losing his mind.
Tulips gaze never really moved from his lips. Her eyes fixed on the lower half of his face. "Why would i do that?" Tulip asked him quietly. She was silently telling him it was okay for him to proceed if he chose too.
"Flowers I'm serious." He muttered, he raised one hand to leave her waist. His fingertips slid to the side of her neck and moved to hold behind it. Mitch used his grip to pull her closer up towards him. "Last chance to bail" he told her
"Shut up already Mitch." She told him expecting him to finally come forward with it. Tulip was anticipating his kiss, she was ready for it, waiting for it. Her stomach was doing flips. She felt a thousand things at once, nervousness and excitement bubbled inside her. The hands on his chest bunched up slightly, Tulip pulled and held the fabric of his shirt lightly.
The man nodded shyly. The silent 'yes ma'am' was all she could gather. Both of their hearts were soaring as it was finally going to happen. Whatever space was left between them didn't stand a chance, up until Violet Caulfield came home of course.
The front door shut loudly down the hall. Startling the pair out of their skins as footsteps came racing into the house. Violet was home from school. With her backpack and her hair in two twin braids that were equally as messy, Violet raced into the house.
Mitch and Tulip found themselves pulling away from each other quickly. Violet came bolting into the kitchen with her backpack swaying behind her. The youngest Caulfield squinted as she looked over her older sister and a random man with brightly colored hair instead of her parents. Violet guessed it was another one of her sister's friends. After all there was a handful of other people outside, she knew Tulip was always showing up with random people.
The girl was still frowning despite of Stevo's attempts to cheer her up while she'd been outside. She knew this day was coming but it didn't make her feel any better. That morning she'd begged her mom to let her stay home from school. The excuse she gave was to "help" Tulip with her boxes all day. Her argument didn't make it very far. Violet was in her school uniform that morning anyway. Still, the young girl couldn't believe it. It was moving day already. She'd come home to see the cars in the driveway and a U-haul.
Tulip was leaving already. It wasn't fair.
Despite the frown on the young girls face she looked up at the pair. "Can't you go tomorrow?" Violet asked slipping one of her arms out of her bag straps and bracing for the weight on her other shoulder. Tulip rushed in to grab it by its top handle and take it from her, letting the child slip her other arm out.
Tulip got the girls backpack situated on the back of one of the kitchen chairs. She was lucky that she had a second to get herself together because her Violet's question had her heart breaking. "I'm sorry, Vi" Tulip said, lowering herself down to a squat. She was almost at the same level now. "C'mere." She beckoned.
Violet walked towards her, big watery eyes looked at Tulip with enough sadness to make her rethink everything.
"I think I know something that might cheer you up" Tulip said holding her arms open for Violet to come give her a hug. Truthfully Tulip hadn't stopped treating her like she was a four year old despite being double the age. "Have you met Mitchell?" Tulip asked gently. Her eyes flickering over to the man swallowing his anxiety and the lump in his throat. The girl reached out and grabbed her little sister by her tiny shoulders and spun her around to look at the man.
Vi shook her head quickly and looked to her sister. The young girl was still frowning and looked absolutely distraught.
"Well let me tell you a secret." Tulip said standing up to her full height now. She let her hand fall to the top of the little girls head, messing up her hair and her braids just a bit further. "Mitch here, is gonna be driving that truck later and I'd bet if you asked really really nicely, he'd let you sit in the front with him." Tulip offered. "He might even let you drive."
Violet perked up at that. Mitch however was still swallowing down air. His heart was still jumping in his chest from just a minute ago and the moment that slipped through his fingers.
Summary: Mitchell Beckett finds himself obsessed with a girl that everyone seems to know besides him. One night in a WaffleHouse of all places he runs into her by complete surprise. Hopefully he doesn't screw things up too bad...
Mitchell had never once seen her.
At first he thought it was horse shit. He'd hear whispers through the other bands, other people and even his friends. He'd hear stories but none of it could actually be true, could it? It was one fucking girl, who could possibly care enough? Then again that was before he cared. He had no idea who this bitch was.
The universe had to spite him, obviously. He'd finished his set twenty minutes ago, with sweat coating his shirt and a beer can having been dumped on his head backstage afterwards. Mitch felt like a fucking mess, then again he might have been cleaner still than half the slobs in that pit out there.
He'd slinked off towards the back door of the venue. The cold air was welcome when the heat inside got to be unbearable. The place was in shambles already, the air conditioning barely worked as it was.
Mitchell's eyes landed on a girl who was sitting atop a long busted amplifier and speaking to someone. His feet halted in a near instant. The woman didn't look happy, she looked piss drunk and beyond irritated. He'd go as far to say she looked like she was getting ready to spit fire at whoever the man before her was.
He'd watched over the scene, both in awe of her and to see what was transpiring. If he recalled correctly the man was some guy in one of the bands. One of the losers from The Flag maybe. Mitch watched as the man finally stomped off and out of the venue doors right past him.
A low whistle sounded from Mitch's lips. His multicolored eyes watched the woman who turned back into herself, muttering and shaking her head. He turned himself to exit the backstage area, not before sparing her another glance. That girl looked like a bitch in every way that mattered. It was that night that he finally saw her.
So okay, he understood the appeal. She was hot. He could have figured that out by the way people talked about her. But once he'd seen her and that judgmental stare, he found himself looking out for her everywhere.
Mitchell had never once seen her smile.
Since that day he'd never even seen her seem to enjoy herself. He had seen her scream, seen her jump around and surf the crowd of bodies in the room but he'd never actually seen her smile. Part of him wondered if she was even capable of it.
It took a few more weeks for Mitchell to fully join the bandwagon of delusional freaks. Of course he didn't realize he was one of them. He'd catch himself looking out for her everywhere, at every show he looked for her, he'd try and send her subtle glances. He'd stand at that stupid merch table after every show.
Mitchell didn't realize just how far deep he was into it till he caught himself at the height of his delusion. His muse came in different ways, usually it was fueled by alcohol or a densely packed bowl of weed at Stevo and Bobs place when he actually cared to show his face. Instead, Mitch crafted a full song in a single night while sober. It was all about a girl he hadn't even spoken to before. This was pathetic wasn't it? He was beginning to think so.
Mitchell wasn't exactly scared of her. As attractive as he thought she was, as intimidating as that stare could be, at the end of the day she was just a person. He kept telling himself that least. He shouldn't be so nervous. There was absolutely no reason to be that anxious. She was just a fucking girl.
And then he found out just how fucking deep this went. This girl had more songs written about her than he had on his set list. Lullaby, I'm Not a Loser, Great Body, and Blown Fuze were all about her. The Fingers wrote a fucking song about this chick! Somehow it made him a little less anxious to finally perform his own. The kicker was she wasn't even there that night.
Mitchell hadn't seen her in months. It had started to make him antsy whenever he was at shows now. He couldn't find her anywhere. It started to feel like a sign from the universe to give up. That was up until the universe smacked him in the face for even thinking that. Then he found her where he least expected it.
It was three in the morning in a goddamn Waffle House.
Mitchell had been driving home after spending an egregiously long time at his friend's house. Despite being behind the wheel of his decade old prius, the man had been obliterated and under the influence. His eyes were red when he pulled over into the parking lot. He'd been feeling the munchies since before he even left the house.
He'd sat down at the bar top and happily taken the coffee mug into his hands. It did a phenomenal job of warming up his hands. The man simply enjoyed himself in silence, his brain was hazy and he wouldn't have had it any other way.
That was until he had turned his head to look at the jukebox that was quietly playing in the corner. His heart jumped in his chest. Fuck. The table right beside it. It was her. Jesus Fucking Christ, it was her! His coffee suddenly felt scalding hot in palms and it was like all blood drained from him. Internally Mitch was trying to get himself to calm down. His inner monologue the same as it always was.
She's just a girl. Relax.
His eyes shifted over again for confirmation. His eyes snapped back forward the second he had it. He needed to think this through. There had to be a better way around this.
Mitch took another sip from his coffee and fished his wallet out of his pocket. With a timid breath the man picked himself up and hauled his ass as well as his coffee cup over to the jukebox. Her table was right beside him. She seemed to be engrossed in her phone with the same pissed off look on her face.
He found himself biting back a smile as he looked over her table. The small bottle of apple juice was half empty and her plate was half eaten. He turned back to the jukebox screen and took a deep breath. Now or never.
"Any requests? This place is depressing." Mitchell said aloud, placing his mug on top of the box. He began to survey over the options the computer offered. He finally looked over to see the girl picking up her head.
This was the closest he'd ever actually seen her. Fading blackish brown hair, startling grey eyes that looked through him, piercings that shone in the light, he thought she looked amazing. Even with the day old makeup she wore he thought she looked astounding, not that he was trying to be superficial.
Tulip picked up her head and quirked a brow. Was this guy talking to her? There was an old man in the corner eating by himself and two workers, nobody else was near them. He had to be.
"Something other than Luke Bryan?" Tulip pitched the idea with an amused scoff. "I've had half a mind to change that thing all night." She told the man truthfully.
The girl looked down to her phone. She'd texted her group chat and had been met with silence. For once all of her friends were actually sleeping.
"Now that I can get behind." Mitch chuckled as he pressed a few buttons. His eyes looked to her tee shirt, he ignored the cut off collar and the way it drooped off her shoulders his eyes fixed on the lettering. "Support Local Music". That was the old version of the shirt they'd been selling at the venue for weeks now. Green and blue eyes looked over her before he made another comment. "Something tells me you're into something a little heavier."
Tulip scoffed again and put down her phone and looked up at this guy. He was... familiar. In a way she couldn't name. She'd seen him before, definitely, she just couldn't place it. He was kind of pretty, one of those kinds. She was having trouble placing him. Which was kind of ironic considering his brightly colored hair.
"What told you that?" She asked him. Tulip leaned back in her seat, broadening herself out and taking up more space. Her confidence and ego started to peak through as she looked up at him.
Mitchell pressed a few buttons and a new song finally came on. He moved to lean against the banister of the booth, his arms were over the glass that separated it. "Your shirt. It's from The Outpost isn't it?" He asked
Tulip swallowed and eyed the man suspiciously. "Yeah." She told him hesitantly. Where the fuck did she know him from. She had to know him from somewhere. It was starting to eat away at her.
The man nodded coolly and let out a tired sigh. "I've been playing there lately, I recognized it." He told her casually. "You uh, go there often?" Mitch asked her, still trying to keep his nonchalance.
"Not too often. Lot of these bands are tanking" she confessed to him. "I pretty much only pull up for Nasty Things at this point" Tulip squinted at him, still trying to remember him.
Mitchell only laughed and turned to grab his coffee mug off the top of the jukebox. He took a sip before going back to holding it in his palms. "Mind if I sit?" He asked her.
Tulip gestured to the empty booth seat across from her. She silently told him to go ahead.
"They're pretty good, getting bigger from what I hear." He added on with a smile. "I haven't seen them come around in a while. I think they're finally starting to outgrow Outpost." He chuckled to himself and placed his mug down on the table as he made himself comfortable.
Tulip nodded. "I definitely think you're right." She told him with a sigh. The girl picked up her apple juice container and took a sip from the straw she'd tossed in it. "If I have to start actually paying admission I'm gonna kill him." She told the man.
Mitchell laughed and looked at her, she didn't seem all that amused still. She looked tired, not in a bad way, not that he thought. Her hair was messy, her makeup was definitely from the day before and the all around disheveled look wasn't intentional.
"Next week it's supposed to be free entry when you pull up after ten" he shared with her. Mitch licked over his lips and bit the bullet. "I'm supposed to be on at eleven, if you'd wanna show up for another band maybe." He said sheepishly.
His lips moved awkwardly and his hands fidgeted with the rings on his fingers. Tulip looked at him with narrowed eyes, he looked so sheepish. She found herself looking at him a little more intently. Who the fuck was this guy? She intended to find out.
"So." Tulip stated looking at him. "Who are you again?" She asked the man, she hadn't a clue anymore. After a while she assumed she'd remember at some point but that clearly wasn't happening.
He looked at her and tapped his finger against the table as he fidgeted. "I'm Mitchell, I'm in Goliath, I'm not sure if you've seen-"
"-Oh!" Tulip said nodding along and cutting him off. "Okay. Okay, I've definitely seen you before." She said happy to finally have her memories in order. The beginning of a smile curled on her lips. "You guys got anything new? I haven't checked in for..." she inhaled sharply and let out a noise that told that she was coming up empty. "At least a few months." She told him truthfully.
He nodded in understanding, letting her know that he was following along. "I'm hard launching like four songs next show." He told her with a sheepish smile.
Tulip looked at him and took a breath. She was free next weekend, maybe she was due to call up Stevo and finally hang. "You got any cds?" Tulip asked him. "I'd hate to find out the hard way that you don't."
Mitch moved to pat himself down as if he had one on him. He knew damn well he didn't have it actually on his person, what kind of weirdo would do that? "I think I have in my car actually" he said looking out towards the window.
Her hair moved as she turned her head to look in the same direction he was. "Hang onto it, I guess I'll pick it up on Friday then." She shrugged and looked back over to him.
He lit up at that. His eyes widened and his smile grew wide. "Yeah?" He asked hopefully.
Tulip was beginning to see just how high this man was. His eyes weren't nearly as red as they'd been when he first came in. It started to make sense. She looked at him seemingly entertained.
"Yeah." She told him. The man's smile was nothing short of proud. Tulip was beginning to think it was contagious. She found herself smiling slightly too. "Yeah, I'll grab it then."
Mitchell looked at her, happy as could be. She would be coming to the show, just to see him. She wasn't coming to see Nasty Things, she wasn't coming to see The Flag, and she wasn't coming to see The Fingers. She was coming to see him. He couldn't keep his eyes off of her. She was something else.
She was smiling at him. When Mitch first heard about her, he didn't get the hype. Then he'd seen her and it all made sense. But right then and there, once he saw her smile and shake her head to turn away, he finally understood it. He'd do anything to make that smile stay on her face.
Mitchell was convinced he never wanted to see her frown again.
