Some good news in among all the sad news lately: Film is Fabulous! have recovered an episode of Late Night Horror, the 1968 BBC horror anthology. Previously just one episode was known to exist (found 10 years ago); the new discovery is the first episode, No Such Thing as a Vampire, which was quite possibly the first ever production shot in colour for the BBC. The find is a black and white 16mm recording, but FIF hope to attempt colour recovery on the footage

Jango was a brief run series spun off from a single play in the ITV Television Playhouse #strand (as an aside‚ I've never noticed till now that the 'television' in that title is surplus to requirements). Urquhart had starred in #that single play too (Murder Stamp‚ seemingly screened around October 1960) but he was clearly taken with the character: he has a creator #credit for the subsequent series. 8 episodes were shown in early '61 and then presumed lost for a long time (not untypical of a Rediffusion #show). happily‚ this sole orphan episode‚ the seventh and penultimate in the run‚ was found some time in the 1990s #it shows the wear and tear of many years in the wilderness and picture quality isn't great (see pics). but small miracle to have it at all #so the show? very mild. pitched somewhere between crime mystery and outright comedy but mostly staying very much in the centre of the two #a modest thing‚ playing on Jango's eccentricities (as well as some less palatable gender politics of the era) for laughs. hard to know if #this loner is representative of the show as a whole without any more to compare; but it's a pleasant distraction all the same

#late night horror #the corpse can't play #horror tv #missing tv #1968 #bbc #lost tv #john burke #hugh leonard #paddy russell #clare austin #frank barry #samuel burleigh #mark colleano #erin geraghty #kim goody #neil hallett #beverley jennings #karen newport #michael newport #brent oldfield #christine pollon #late night horror was an attempt by the bbc to produce a horror anthology in colour adapting pre existing short stories. it was not a #conspicuous success; the first series of 6 episodes was met with lukewarm reviews that grumbled the series was either too horrible or not #at all horrible enough (such is art). no second series appeared. there was a repeat showing around 1970 and then the tapes were junked as #was standard practice (alas). happily this single episode was recovered by kaleidoscope from private hands in 2016 and has spent the last #couple of years being cleaned up and getting colour recovery work on it for a release. and it looks great! stunning‚ considering the flaws #of the unrestored copy (the disc contains a very interesting feature on the restoration). sadly no sign of the other 5 episodes as yet.#we can but hope. as horror tv this is a little obvious but well played (a fine young cast to be sure) and suitably nasty in its conclusion.#more an item of (great) interest than a genuinely great piece of tv‚ but kaleidoscope's release includes a wonderful book on the series

Patrick Mower and a young Jacqueline Pearce in the first episode of Haunted: I Like it Here (1.1, ABC, 1967); Mower was the only regular member of cast across the eight episode series, as Michael West, a university lecturer investigating the paranormal and occult. No episodes are known to exist and the series is considered to be entirely lost.

"The year is 1969. This is 1969, this is the year in which you claim to have been born."

"You really are gone, aren't you, old boy?"

"Look, Connor, if I were to show you a calendar, or a newspaper, which clearly shows today's date is June the fourth, 1969, will you believe me then?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because this job we're doing is difficult enough, and sometimes everybody doubts his or her reason. The pressure's on all the time, so you have to cling to certain unalterable things - like your name, the date, the names of friends! Now, I know what year it is, do you understand that? I know!"

Again this is an audio presentation of the surviving soundtrack set to promotional photos taken by the BBC #The Yellow Pill had actually been adapted before for Out of this World‚ the Sci fi anthology which acted as the catalyst for OotU and which #Had brought Irene Shubik recognition in the first place; sadly that version is also lost‚ audio as well. This is maybe the most successful #Of the audio presentations simply because of the brevity of plot and staging: the whole thing is largely conversational and set in one or #Two rooms‚ and in fact if you were adapting the story as a radio play there are very few differences you'd need to make to Griffiths'#Script. That's not to say this is an overly simple tale; actually it feels very 60s‚ classic mindbending look at what constitutes reality #And how one can be sure that the real world is‚ well‚ the real world. The Matrix meets Inception but on a BBC budget and starring Captain #Scarlet. Matthews is very good actually; there's a cleverness in casting here so that Matthews and Edwards are both playing to type (as a #Haughty psychiatrist and a rough policeman respectively) but it's very much a conscious decision: after all the plot hinges on whether #These ppl are actually real at all or whether they're a form of fiction (meta casting in a way). There's room in the story (and seemingly #From reviews in the previous adaptation) for a degree of uncertainty in the final reveal (again think the end of Inception) but this #Version‚ for better or worse‚ plays it straight.
