I just watched (some and skimmed through) the leaked Missing Link opening and...oof. Kingdom Hearts has completely lost all of its whimsy trying to chase the hyper realistic look and by trying too hard to take itself seriously.
More thoughts on this and some slight mentions of what gets shown in the KH Missing Link OP below:
Warning, I don't have anything nice to say, this 100% a rant.
I hated everything I saw in that trailer and the cityscape setting is atrocious. Like boring af. A bland white walled hospital. People fighting a heartless in astronaut suits...ugh. The mobile games are literally the worst thing to ever happen to Kingdom Hearts. The color and whimsy is like dead to the series right now and this new saga is heading in a direction I don't like in the slightest.
I'm so glad Missing Link got chucked, it looked boring and like more convoluted dogshit. I don't care about this slew of new mobile game characters, I don't want or care about creating my own Keyblade user or whatever the fuck. I just want the already existing characters to have better development, more personal relationship interactions with each other, and for Sora, Riku, and Kairi's story to come to an end. Please, Nomura, stop doing the god awful, signs of poor writing technique often found in piss poor battle shonen crap series of adding more and more characters. Organization XIII was already bad enough back in the day and felt too much like battle shonen shit and now the franchise is a mess like this.
KH as a franchise has already gone on for too long, imo, and jumped the shark with all the mobile game BS, but yeah. I feel like what little we've seen in KH4 so far is just more of this same deeply unappealing direction as Missing Link. I'm going to keep my eyes on the D23 event and see what comes out of that. I hope we can see some more of the whimsical, magical aspect of the series return, but my hopes are extremely low. I really do think that this next saga is moving in a direction that no longer appeals to me. This was already starting to happen with KH3, which I didn't like in the slightest. It was colorful, but that game too saw a loss of whimsy and gave us characters wearing uniformed boring ass plaid outfits, Riku with short hair, and an art style moving more into the hyper detailed more realistic direction (it was still more cartoon looking and stylized than what we've seen of 4 so far, but moving in that direction).
But yeah, I think the KH franchise is ending with Dream Drop Distance for me and I'm honestly okay with that. I'm giving KH4 one final chance to try and pull me in, but I just don't think that is going to happen. Everything I just saw in Missing Link was deeply unappealing to me and I haven't liked anything I've seen in the two KH4 trailers yet. It's probably time I close the book on this franchise for good and just leave it as a franchise for younger fans and/or newer fans who may find this direction more appealing. I'll still always like KH1, KH2, BBS, and DDD though. But yeah, I think my journey with this series is done, I'll likely just check in when it is all done to see how it all wraps up for the characters, but I just have no desire to play or engage with this new saga in the slightest.
