Anticipation has repeatedly turned into frustration in the search for signs of Flight MH370 as objects spotted from planes in a new search area west of Australia have turned out to be garbage. It's a time-wasting distraction for air and sea crews searching for debris from the Malaysia Airlines flight that vanished March 8.

It also points to wider problems in the world's oceans.

"The ocean is like a plastic soup, bulked up with the croutons of these larger items," said Los Angeles captain Charles Moore, an environmental advocate credited with bringing attention to an ocean gyre between Hawaii and California known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which by some accounts is about the size of Texas.

Furious over Malaysia's handling of missing Flight MH370 after the country said the aircraft plunged into the Indian Ocean and that all 239 passengers on board were presumed dead, Chinese relatives of the lost marched Tuesday to the Malaysia Embassy in Beijing, where they threw plastic water bottles, tried to rush the gate and chanted, "Liars!"

The Chinese government, meanwhile, demanded that Malaysia turn over the satellite data it used to conclude that the Malaysia Airlines jetliner fell into the ocean during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8.

Malaysian Prime Minister Naib Razak confirmed at a press conference on Monday that Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 crashed in the southern Indian Ocean. He based the announcement on an analysis of satellite data that placed the plane along a northern or southern arch.

"MH370 flew along the southern corridor, and its last position was in the middle fo the Indiana Ocean west of Perth. This is a remote location, far from any possible landing site," Razak said.

"It is therefore with deep sadness and regret that I must inform you that according to this new data, flight MH370 ended in a southern Indian Ocean. We will be holding a press conference tomorrow with further details."

China has image of new debris as MH370 searchers brace for 'long haul'

Malaysia said Saturday that a Chinese satellite had spotted a large object along a broad stretch of ocean where officials hope to find a Malaysia Airlines plane that has been missing for more than two weeks.

Defense Minister Hishammuddin Hussein told reporters Saturday that he had been informed that a Chinese satellite had spotted an object 74 feet by 43 feet.

‘‘The news that I just received is that the Chinese ambassador received a satellite image of a floating object in the southern corridor and they will be sending ships to verify,’’ he said.

State broadcaster CCTV tweeted an image of the object and said it was captured around noon Tuesday, about 75 miles south of another satellite image that was taken days earlier of two objects in the water.

Search finds no trace of MH370

Search planes sent to find objects in the south Indian Ocean that may be from the missing Malaysia Airlines jet began returning without success Friday, and an Australian official said the hunt would resume Saturday.

The planes are part of an international effort to solve the nearly two-week-old aviation mystery by locatingtwo large objects a satellite detected floating off the southwest coast of Australia about halfway to desolate islands of the Antarctic.

The search for the plane also continues in other regions, including a wide arc sweeping from Laos to Kazakhstan, but the focus for now is in the southern Indian Ocean.

The area is so remote, it takes aircraft four hours each way to fly there and back, which leaves them only about two hours to search.
