Arcane posting, no season 2 spoilers, but discussions of disability, grief and death//
Viktor from the perspective of someone who is disabled, chronically ill and who has recently lost people to terminal illnesses evokes something that may only be described as cathartic.
The whole arcane team took such care to make him a respectful, and dare I say beautiful representation of the lives so many people lead. I have never seen a piece of big media represent disability so well.
The scene of him running is my favourite of the series. It was not a cure, they did not have him ‘overcome’ his disability like there is some magic fix. The interpretations that could be made from this scene, what symbolically it means and what it represents for people are so vast, personal and unique. For me, I’m most deeply touched thinking about the friends of mine who would, and have, given up health for the sake of moments of normalcy, who pushed themselves too far in spite of themselves. Loved ones I’ve seen turn to dependencies and vices that ruined them, just for a fleeting sensation of bliss.
The moment when Jayce stops him before he steps off. How he wanted to go out on his own terms. How so much of what he does is about his autonomy, reclaiming it, and how sometimes that is through terrible means. But is it not worth it to own yourself? It’s a question I feel so many of us have considered at one point or another.
