mischeif makers, a game that isnt well known on the system yet seems to be in the back of the minds of anyone who grew up with the Nintendo 64. definitly a childhood favorite of mine, and a game that I never could remember the name of. as soon as I remembered the name, I went on amazon to order a copy so I could play it again. after I beat the game a thought came across to me: why isn't this game talked about much? I mean, I couldn't ever remember the name of it for years. then it hit me.
most might say it's just an average game on the system, but I think it's because it does something different. the era of 3D video games was at its peak, and the demand for such games were large, which is the reason why Nintendo jumped to a new system to create classics like Super mario 64, Ocarina of Time, and so on. But mischeif makers didnt go that route, they stayed with the classic 2D sidescrolling formula from the Super Nintendo era. I believe it was overlooked just because of how outdated it was, but I believe it set the standard for something in video gaming. it showed that games dont have to have the newest graphic to be great games. you look at games today like Sonic Mania, Undertale, FEZ, and they dont use the newest graphics for its style, they use a more classic style from the SNES/Genesis era. it doesnt seem outdated now, but that's how it was for games like Mischief Makers. I like to think that Mischief makers was the first game to not follow the current formula for games and take a more classical look to it. and man did it age well.
