I forgot to ask my vet this because of everything else that was going on that day, but how exactly does Mirataz work?
I know that it works because my cat ate so much more yesterday than he has in about a week, but how does something that goes on the ear stimulate a cat’s appetite?
gettingvetted here.
Mirataz is the transdermal formulation of mirtazapine, which is a TCA antidepressant. One of its major side effects is increased hunger, which means it is used as an appetite stimulant in animals, especially cats.
Transdermal medications (often given on the inside of the ear) are one way to deliver drugs in instances where the owner is uncomfortable pilling their animals and the animal won't eat the medication in treats. Transdermal medications are considered to be less potent/effective than oral or injectable medications and many transdermal formulations aren't FDA approved. Mirataz is the most commonly used exception to this rule!
